help Land grants
« on: Friday 21 September 07 05:18 UTC (UK) »

I am confused. I have recently been given information regarding a distant relative. The info states that he was given a grant of crown land in New South Wales and ended up marrying the daughter on one of the convicts assigned to him.
My confusion arises from the fact that i cant find when he came to Australia (He was born in 1834 in London) His father-in-law was sentenced in 1833 to 7years transportation for stealing a copper kettle.
My problems 1. how old would have been a suitable age to travel alone and                          receive a land grant
2. How would i find out if Father-in-law received a second sentence in Australia other wise my fellow was a land holder at the age of 6
3.Apparently the father-in-law was already married in England before transportation but i can only find births for children after 1841 in Australia(His wife came to Aust too).

The land holders name was John Vigers Baptized 1834 London(Parents Edward and Maudlin) and died Scone NSW1914

The convict (Father-in-Law) was Samuel Jennison  1802 Belper Derby England died 1860 NSW

John Vigers married Jemima Jennison May 1860 in Gowrie NSW and together they had 3 sons and 13 daughters (i have only found births or deaths for 9 children so far)

There was still family living in NSW about 10yrs ago but i have no idea have to locate them. A white pages search for Australia only revealed 4 in West Aust (including my brother and Father) and none for the rest of the country.

Any ideas on how to find this information would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi There,
I have had a quick look and I feel that what it should say ......is that John Vigers or Vigors...married Jemima Jennison ....the daughter of a freed convict.......for it seems that samuel Jennison died in 1860....
It is also possible that samuels son also named Samuel was working of John Vigers....
There has to be an error in what has been given to you..
good luck

Found a John Vigers arriving Melbourne, aged 21 in 1857 aboard "David G Fleming". Same name but is it the same person you are after?

Also surname of Vigger arriving in Sydney 1854 aboard "Hellespont" and then a Mr Vigors and son arriving Sydney 1854 aboard "Crescent City".

I know last two have different spellings, and no first name/initial or age. Sometimes anything is worth a try.

Sorry, can't help you with this one. I've never gone through line of researching before, however, I do know other researchers have, but where they obtained their information, I don't know..............?

I just checked the NSW State Archives site

http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/staterecords/a-z_index_4705.asp

This is an index as to what records the Archives have. If you scroll down to "L" that will indicate what Land Records are available - unfortunately not on-line though. If you scroll down to "O" you will find what indexes are on-line.

You may have to post a request for someone to physically check the "Land Grant" records at the Archives.

Hi Jody,

My wife is a Jennison, her relative being Samuel the convict who was married in England in 1825. At this stage I have not been able to find children in England, unusual, but 3 in Australia, Jemima, Samuel & Thomas. I have 7 children for Jemima & John but would like to know the names of the ones that you have. If you need any info for the Jennisons please ask

I've had a look in land grants, leases and purchases 1792 - 1865 and can't find the name Vigers. But if Craig (Vigers) or Don (Jennison) happen to read this, I'm trying to help out a friend with her family history and she is a decendant of John Vigers and Jemima Jennison.  So would love to share info.

Re the land grants...have you considered contacting The NSW Lands Dept in Sydney or Helen Dickenson who is a specialist professional researcher for land records?

I looked at at cemetery site for Jennison & Vigers/Vigors - check this out

Good luck

I was browsing GOOGLE for information on Jennisons from Belper, Derbyshire, England, and arrived at your correspondence on ROOTSCHAT.    I am helping a friend who does not have access to the web.   She is a descendant of Abraham Jennison, born 1804 Belper, who was convicted and sent to Australia in 1851 for stealing a gun and a pig.
I note that you have a Samuel Jennison born Belper 1802.   Do you have evidence of his birth, please? and of his parentage?   The parents of Abraham (above) were Abraham and Sarah (born Beardsley) Jennison.
Could they be brothers?
Any help you can give would be very much appreciated - and I can give you lots more information on my friend's Jennison tree.

Many thanks - Margaretmarion

Hi,
Jennison has also be transcribed in indexes as Janison

The NSW index has births/deaths  for these 11 children to John and Jemina/Jamina

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/familyHistory.htm

ELIZABETH 1861-1937 (Hopkins), SARAH 1864-1944 (Huxley), WILLIAM 1868, ADA MAUDE 1870-1948 (Sessions),
SUSAN 1872 -1876, CLARA 1874-1950 (Brown),
EMIMA A1876-1941 (Bridger) , JOHN T1877-1928,
ELLEN EDITH 1879-1949, ISABEL DULCE 1882-1883,
EDWARD d 1942

the variety of ways in which both Viger and Jennison can be transcribed must be a bit of a stumbling block.

So now confirmed 10 of 11 children of John and Jemima found in NSW Index:
ELIZABETH d1937, SARAH d1944, ADA MAUDE d1948, SUSAN d1876, CLARA d1950, JEMIMA A d1941, JOHN T d1928, ELLEN EDITH d1949, ISABEL DULCE d1883, & EDWARD 1942,  WILLIAM, still to find.

So only 5 more to find!

some one also researching Vigars desendents;
