Stafford Prison 1871 - post 1881
« on: Friday 21 September 07 23:20 BST (UK) »

Hi,
Can SKS help, please?

I've found a distant reli who is on both the 1871 and 1881C as being in Stafford prison. So he must have been in prison for more than 10 years.

Can anyone tell me how I would go about try to track down information on the crime committed, the actual duration of the sentence and when he was released.

Is there a website for this sort of information or I am best getting in contact with and visiting the Staffords archives library?

Any advise greatly appreciated

Nigel, you should read up on life in Prison in the 1800's the Prisoners were treated in the most degrading fashion, they spent hours and hours on treadmills and undertaking hard labour, it was quite horrendous.  There are no Prison Records for Stafford that have been kept, the William Salt Library in Stafford has a list of some names, but only for a few years.  You are more likely to find out about the nature of the offense from old Newspapers which are also kept at either the William Salt Library or Stafford Archives.  HTH from mrswoman.

Hi Sylvia,
Trust that you are well. Might be back down under soon. Thanks for the link - I'd totally forgotten about this one. Just found two relli who were awarded the military cross in WW2 - not connected to yours, unfortuantely

Take care

Hi Teetopcat,

I've absolutely no idea on this. To date, I haven't been able to find out any information on the crime, length of prison sentence, release date (if any). An absolute blank, so I've set this aside for a while and will go back to it at a later date when I feel more inspired

Hi Nigel,
Stafford Gaol is very proud of its history and archives, so if you wrote a friendly letter to the Governor, you might be in luck.  They have a lot of stuff on show in their main admin block (plus the gallows, of course!).
Best wishes,
Jackie
