Davis - Lisburn/Belfast - death post 1897
« on: Saturday 22 September 07 16:42 UTC (UK) »

William Davis, wife Charlotte and family arrived in Glasgow from Lisburn, Antrim before 1881.   William died in Glasgow but Charlotte is believed to have returned to Lisburn (or Belfast) around 1893/1894.   The person I am interested in is her daughter Agnes (born abt 1860 Lisburn) - after a very chequered life in and out of the Glasgow Poor House, 4 children with 3 different fathers, etc.  she disappears off every record in December 1897.   I believe she may have followed her mother back to Ireland (her children were in the care of the Parish in Glasgow).

Does anyone have access to death records or burial records for Lisburn to check for the deaths of both Charlotte and Agnes?   Any help appreciated.

I am researching Kemp, Emslie, Mitchell in Lumphanan, Aberdeenshire; Marshall, Shewan and Adie in Longside/Peterhead, Aberdeenshire; Still, Sim, Duncan and Andrew in Boyndie/Fordyce Banffshire; Niven, Bruce, Ross, Robert in Fetteresso / Durris, Kincardineshire.

I have been researching for over 20 years and have a very extensive tree involving each of those names, proven back to the early 18th century in some cases.

Did William and Charlotte have any children born in Scotland - if yes, a birth certificate should indicate whereabouts in Ireland the parents married and so may help tie down an area for you?

Afraid all the children were born in Ireland - they immigrated later in life.   All I have is a Glasgow Poor Law record which shows that one of the children was born in Lisburn.   William died in Glasgow and his wife then returned to Ireland but the record does not show where she settled.

William's death certificate (which should be available from ScotlandsPeople website) should give his parents' names. This may help a bit with trying to look for the line in Ireland.

I have tried a parent search on IGI and it throws up the following, possibly siblings of Agnes:

Sarah, James, John and Henry all born between 1850 and 1861.

They all seem to have been christened/baptised in a Presbyterian Church in or near Killaney parish, County Down.

You can see the townland names for this parish at:

The following link has pictures/details of the Church of Ireland and Presbyterian churches in Killaney Parish:

Since this thread was started the index to civil registrations was put online (free) which may make it easier to search for these people.

If you are searching for deaths it will probably help to have an idea of birth year to narrow down the possibilities.
