James Gregory Doolittle
« on: Saturday 22 September 07 23:53 UTC (UK) »

Hello,

I am seeking the birth certificate for my 2nd great grandfather, James Gregory Doolittle. He was born in July of 1855 in Wicklow, Ireland. James was the son of Thomas Doolittle (Harbor Commisioner and Coal Merchant in Main, St. Wicklow) and Mary Anna Gregory. He had a brother named Thomas Arthur. Both James and Thomas were mariners and moved to Liverpool, England to work there.

James immigrated to the US in 1893, naturalized and died in Salt Lake City in 1924. I don't know if Thomas followed his brother or stayed in Liverpool.

Any information, stories, documents and/or pictures of anyone is this family or local would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much,
Kristin

Kristin,

There won't be a birth cert for James because civil registration for births did not begin in Ireland until 1864. But you may find a baptism record for him if you know where he was born and his religious denomination.

Regarding his brother Thomas - I suppose you've seen his family in the England 1881 census on the LDS site? (Though not James - perhaps away at sea).

To help find out if he emigrated to the USA, you could place a census look-up request for 1891 and 1901 on the Rootschat Lancashire or Cheshire board. (He seems to have moved around according to the birthplaces of his children)

Good luck

Hi Rob,

Edward Doollittle, son of George Doolittle & Catherine Connor, both of Wicklow Town, was bap. in St. Patrick's R.C. Church Wicklow,30th August 1812, He married Mary Ryan 29th August 1836 also in St. Patrick's Church. Witnessed by John Rorke and Martha Murphy. They had 12 children born between 1837 - 1858: Mary, Celia, Sophie, George, Petger, Charlotte (1), Arthur, Charlotte (2), Emma, James and |John Chritopher.

If a name was important to the family the practice was sif one child who was christened that name i.e. Charlotte died, the next girl to come along was called Charlott.

George & Catherine were married in Wicklow Catholic Parish Church, 29th May 1810, witnessed by Thomas Fitzgerald and Elinn... Connor. Know of 6 children including the above Edward.

James Gregory Doolittle had a sister called Catherine also who was born circa 1844 does anyone have her correct date of birth in their files, and she died at Brittas Bay in 1898, I have the data and headstone photograph of that event as I also have the man who was the Harbour master or linked to coastguards stone photographed as well.

I  would like to know also what year the first Charlotte daughter of Mary Ann Ryan  was born if that is available also, as it would clarify for me which girl married William Byrne, as I had only one Charlotte in my list of 10 children and I note there is 12?

Also I have located 10 children for the Wall -Doolittle marriage was there more?
Also located 7 Children for the Nichols -Doolittle marriage was there more?

And of course the one we are all intirgued by is John who was lost amongst the indians, guess he may have been an Indian agent if such things were going on back then.

I also have the 5/5/1858 for his birth date and I would have gleaned this from parish records BUT I may have written down wrong is there a confirmation from anyone else on this date to make my record correct.

I do have data I am willing to share if I have details no one else has.

Yours in gen
Cara
PS JAmes Dollittle died at sea any idea on where on that detail?

I might add this is the most questions I have asked in regards to genealogy in a month of sundays.
