1871 Census lookup please - BATES

I am looking to find some more information on the children of Charles and Sophia Bates - William (b1833?) and James (1842?). 

I would like to know if they had children with their wives.

This is what I have:

I found a William married to a Maria in the 1871.

William 38 yrs
Maria    41 yrs
Sarah J 13 yrs
William E 12 yrs

120 Waterside
Civil Parish Chesham
Ecclesiastical Parish Christchurch
Town Chesham
County Buchinghamshire

Occupation: wood shovel maker ( looks to me) no mention of police force

RG10, Piece 1394, folio 81, page21


James b abt 1842 Marsworth, Buckinghamshire aged 29
Occupation: Attendant at Store.......( sorry cant read it)
Emma aged 24 same birth place as 1861 census
Jane Maull aged 47

Reg and sub registration district Aylesburry

Rg 10., Piece 1412, Folio 79, page16

Hi Lil

thankyou for looking.  I believe that William Bates married Maria King in 1861 just before the 1861 Census.  How timely!  Maybe those children could be hers before she married?Huh?

I just added some info about William that I have found this afternoon.  They had moved to Middlesex in 1881 and had 3 kids at this time.  Interestingly he had changed from a policeman to a railway pointsman.

I often wondered what someone might have to do to have an occupation as Superannuated Foresters Club.  Perhaps it is related to the Attendant at store thing?

Tanya. I have no idea about the Superannuated Forestors Club, but some else may look at the census if reading this and make out the last word for you, sorry but I cant work it out.

I had just found the son Thomas's birth in 1863 listed as Kensington.

Can I ask is Henry definitely 17 and not 7?  Maybe he belongs to someone else if he was born in Marsworth and not in Middlesex.

And is Henry's last name Bates?  not Maria's maiden name King? 

humm where does he fit if William has a younger brother James?

Henry is definitely a Bates. Its possible he is the son of James , but as both census are for 1871 its a little hard to tell. Are William and James the only brothers? or is there another your not aware of that may have a son too. Yes lots of questions, enjoy looking for the answer  Smiley

Found a Henry Bates in the 1861 b abt 1854 Marsworth, Buckinghamshire, parents John and Sarah ( are these names familiar)Other children are Magnet, Sarah Jane and Phobebe.

Charles (the father of William and James who we have been talking about) - his grandfather was John Bates (the earliest link I have in my tree) and Charles has Mary and Phoebe as sisters......  so possibly.

Could you confirm the ages of Mary and Sarah Jane in 1861 please???
