I can't see any mention previously so posting this.
There is a project to set up a Lochaber Archive in Fort William, I think they are hoping to have something running this year but otherwise probably next year.
Once the archive meets the necessary standards (some BS or ISO number which I can't remember) they hope to get some records transferred from both Edinburgh and Inverness.
There have been also talks with local estates and land-owners to try to persuade them to transfer their records to the archive both for safe-keeping and access (I think they said that one prominent estate keeps their "archive" in cardboard boxes in the attic!).

November opening set for archive centre
According to day's Lochaber News, the Lochaber Archive will open in November
The National Archives of Scotland has already committed to transferring the records of the Lochaber Presbytery. And Highland Council's library service is committed to transferring its holdings of microfilmed Census returns from 1841-1901 and old parish registers for the Lochaber area up to the year 1855.

Hi Martin, good news, thanks for the information. I had heard of the E-college at Mallaig, this for me is much better. Any idea what level of information will be archived - will it include family records perhaps submitted by local families? Hope so. Having corresponded with folk from outside the UK, I think it's going to be a very busy asset to the area. Peter

Lochaber Archive is now open
I haven't found their catalogue online but they have moved the census and parish register films across from the library.
They also have the Cameron of Locheil and Cameron-Head of Lochailort archives.
