Engraved on John Hayes tombstone in Flaybrick Cemetery, Birkenhead, Cheshire is the name Catharine Jane Bartlet, age 40, died Dec. 14, 1897.

English Daisy,
In 1861 John Hayes and Sarah do not have any children with them. RG9/ 2643/ 15/ 23
I cannot seem to find anything that might help about a Catherine Hayes born around that time that I would be happy to post . Maybe someone else with more knowledge of the area will be able to help.

Hi dee
Yes, this is proving to be a difficult search to find Catharine Bartlet.
Yesterday, I came across a 1901 Census record showing my great grandparents, Robert Samuel Preston and his wife, Jane Griffiths living at 5 Limekiln Lane, District of Wallasey. Civil parish, Poulton cum Seacombe.
Robert was born May 1849 in Wallasey and Jane was born Dec. 1837 in Llanelly, Car., Wales. They married Oct. 1869. in Liverpool.
Living next door at 6 Limekiln Lane were:
John Herbert Bowen (or Bower ?) head , 31 yrs, Miller (?) Engine Shop, worker, born in Kerry Montgomeryshire, Wales
Eliz A wife age 35 born Chisbury Wiltshire
Harry Bartlett stepson 8 yrs born in Addlestone, Surrey, Eng. William J. Bartlett stepson 3 yrs born in Poulton, Wallasey
My grand uncle from Kerry, Montgomery married my grandfather's sister, Mary Ann Hayes from Poulton cum Seacombe. So they could have had a possible connection with John Herbert Bowen from Kerry, Mont.
John Hayes's brother Samuel Hayes married a Hannah Griffiths (no relationship to Jane Griffiths) from Northern Wales. Samuel and Hannah are also my great grandparents. They lived in Poulton cum Seacombe close to Robert Preston.
Not sure if all this information is making sense but it does show how close they lived to one another. However, John Hayes lived with wife Mary in Birkenhead.
So, Dee if you or any other interested Rootschatter could do a search for the two Bartlett stepsons and their mother Eliza A listed in the 1901 Census, it would be much appreciated.
Thank you English Daisy

English Daisy,
I have been looking at all the Hay* entries and Bartlet* entries for either born in or living in the places you have mentioned, and I can still not see a likely Cath* Hayes or Bartlet. I have used wild card searches so that spelling variations showed up.
Neither can I find Eliz A. Bowen or Bartlet. Even a search for all the Eliz* born Chisbury does not show her in 1891 as either Bowen or Barlet.
Someone else might be able to help you, but I can't, I am afraid.

Hi ShaunJ
Thank you so much for the information on Sanderson. Also, a thank you to Dee for taking the time to look for Catharine!
Yes, the name, Sanderson, is known to me. In the 1901 Census, a Lilly Sanderson, niece, age 11 was listed living in John Hayes home in Birkenhead.
Since, Catharine Jane died in 1897, age 40, John and Mary A. Hayes, must be caring for her. If Catharine J. married John Bartlett in 1892, then Lilly was born before this event and that is why she has the surname, Sanderson.
I searched Cheshire BMD and Free BMD for the birth date of Catharine J. Sanderson but could not find her.
John's wife, Mary Ann was born on Isle of Man. Since, there are no Catharine Jane siblings in John Hayes family, she may be the sister of Mary Ann (surname not known).
Thank you again for your help!
Regards English Daisy

Hi ShaunJ and Ricky 1
I just found a helpful piece of information in my notes which read:
Lillian Annie Sanderson Birth registered qrt ending December 1889 Birkenhead 8a 475
This looks like my Lilly! Now, I know who her mother is and why Catherine's name appears on John Hayes's tombstone!
Lilly's mother must have put her infant daughter in the care of the couple mentioned in 1891 census, as she was a single mother.
Thanks English Daisy
