Belgium WW1 refugees
« on: Thursday 27 September 07 16:26 BST (UK) »

Is there anyone out there who knows of any on line resources for Belgium.
I've tried Geneanet but had no luck. I'm trying to find my husbands family. Oscar Verhoest and his wife and child came to England as refugees of the first world war in 1915. This is a far back as I can go. I know they came from Brugges. Has anyone got any ideas please.

Were the wife and child Emma Maria Torreele and Karel Hubertus? If so, the two of them became British citizens in 1927.  (see www.nationalarchives.gov.uk catalogue)

There are very few Belgian records online.  There's this, for example:
http://arch.arch.be/component/option,com_analyses/Itemid,122/lang,en_GB/
 - there's a few hits for Verhoests in Brugge.

You have the problem that you're looking for relatively recent records - you don't say how old their child was, but you could be looking for a birth and marriage within the past 100 years, in which case privacy laws kick in.

There is also a Julian Verhoest on freebmd who married in 1914 Justine Janssons/Janssens - maybe a brother or cousin of Oscar?

Thankyou so much Karel Verhoest was my husbands grandfather and was 4 when he came to England. His mothers maiden name was indeed Torreele. I will try your suggestions. Thankyou once again.
