Glendalough mines
« on: Monday 24 September 07 17:57 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone tell me where I might be able to access an employees list for the Glendalough mines for the period 1865 -1872? I have sent an e-mail to Glendalough Mines Heritage site but not recieved any answer.

many thanks

Hi Jan,

I've been looking at the Glendalough Mining Heritage Project website to see if I could come up with a few ideas about the list of employees that you're seeking. The Glendalough Mining Company was established in 1809 by Thomas Weaver in partnership with a number of local investors. The Wynne family bought the mines from the Mining Company of Ireland in 1890. Then J. B. Wynne and other investors established St. Kevin’s Lead and Zinc Mine in 1948. I wonder if the Wynne family deposited any documents or papers relating to the mines in any of the archives in Dublin.

Many thanks Christopher, have you any idea whether I will be able to access any records online or would the archives be able to tell me if I phoned them. I am in England so a trip to the archives is out of the question at the moment.

Hi Jan,

I see that the Mining Heritage Project can be contacted via the Glendalough Hotel. It might do no harm to e-mail or phone the hotel to see if you can get a contact name before attempting to see if one of the Dublin archives might have a list of employees of the mines.

I realise I am answering a very old ask- but over the past decade I have been researching the area of Avoca, and the mining interests there and have compiled a list of miners that number a lone 85 so far, so now I am asking anyone who had miners in the area of Glendalough, Avoca and surrounds would they be able to send me their miners names to add to this list, and they may have a copy of my names in return with some intirguing and interesting snippets of information I have gleaned over the years from parish registers etc.

Good morning Cara,
I am presuming that William Henry Caddy (b. abt 1841 unknown) worked at the mine during the period 1867-1871, 2 female children (who did not survive) were born December 9, 1868 and September 29, 1870 Annamoe.
William Henry  was married to Frances (Fanny) Jolly (Jolley) who came from C. Wicklow (unknown where at this time). Variations on the spelling of Caddy are Caddey/Cady. William was a  Miner on all censuses. I know they had left Ireland by 1872 as they had 3 sons born in Ulverston, Lancs (1872, 1873 and 1877) they were back in Ireland for the birth of their last son (Dec 1879) but his christening was in Dalkey, Dublin.

Jan,

I am sorry about the delay but things happened as it does..........Caddy family as far as my research shows did not work as miners but were linked to the Coastguards  of Wicklow in fact in the Jacks Holes Area as I have the baptisms in my files of children for William Caddy  married to a Mary Unknown had three children that I have but I am wondering if it is the same family as yours .........because these children born in the same time frame you quote but are still there in 1877............I also have in this data base some Jolley data

Cheers

Hi Cara,
I think that we have different Caddy families! William was def. a miner and they were not in Ireland in 1877.

Many thanks

Hi Christopher,
I'm just curious, do you know if this Wynne family are a branch of the William Wynne family of Ruabon?
Thanks,

Hi Cara,
While tracing my family I discovered that my great great grandfather, Patrick Courtney married Mary Carton in Ashford, Co Wicklow in 1868. Mary's father is named as Ralph Carton and he was a miner living in Brockagh at the time. Do you have any info regarding him.      Thanks, Brn
