Slater help
« on: Tuesday 25 September 07 02:14 UTC (UK) »

SLATER/Inverness/Invergarry/ GlengarryHi..I have hit a brick wall with researching my Slater line.  I need help from those of you over there. I'm in the USA. It's difficult when you don't know the geography.
This is what I have:

John Slater..my gr. great grandfater...found in 1891 census(glengarry) and 1901(Inverness)He was employed as a coachman and census data says he was born in Stanton, England 1840 0r 41
spouse..Mary Ann Bowden born England, Buckinghamshire circa 1841

Children..
Alexander..my gr. granfather..born 1872 September 9 Kilmonivaig, Inverness, came to America 1890
Mary born/Inverness/Invergarry circa 1877
Charles, born Devon, Saint something, circa 1867
Eleanor, Middlesex, St George 1869 or 70
Elizabeth circa 1875 Inverness
Agnes circa 1881 Inverness
Jean or Jane circa 1883 Inverness
John, August 20,1870, Scotland
Alice circa 1879
All I have are census records from 1861 through 1901

I would love any birth, death, marriage, cemetery records..newspaper articles I could get. Also, any insight into the life of a coachman.  I'm assuming no one can assist me in getting and farthur back in my family tree with a name as common as John Slater. I just hope to know more about those mentioned above. John and Mary had so many children. There must be someone still around.

Thanks so much for any help that can be given.
Amy

Hi Amy,

I'm descended from Eleanor Slater, and have done some research into John Slater. I realise that this response comes almost a year to the day after your first post, but I hope that this message reaches you. I have rather a lot of information into the Slaters, and have managed to get back a lot further than you might have expected!

Anyway, I hope you are able to read this - please get in touch soon if you would like to know more.

Sam,
I was away for the weekend and just returned home to your message. I couldn't be more excited.   I cannot wait to see what information you have to share with me.  All that I have is from a few censuses and I could never get any farther back than John.   I do have a few letters I could share from you from one of Eleanor and Alex's siblings, as well as Alex's obit and Immigration data.  I also have a great photo of John and Mary Slater.
Is there a way to do private messaging on this site? I couldn't find one and I need to get you my e-mail address.  You are the FIRST Slater relative I have found while researching this line of my tree. I can't wait to here from you. Let me know how we can exchange e-mails? Are you in the US?

Amy

If you click on Sam's name on the left hand side, it will take you through to their personal profile. From this page, near the bottom, you will see ' ..send this RootsChatter a personal message". Click on that and you're through to RootsChat's personal message service.

Good luck both of you with your research  Smiley

Hi Amy,

I'm just writing an email now with all (or most) of the stuff that I know, or can remember at the moment (I'm at work, so I don't have as much access to things as I would if I was at home). I'm really glad that you're excited, I am too! It'll be fantastic to hear from you with all the stuff that you know. For some reason, the private message thing won't let me reply to you on that, hence the email.

I'm based in the UK, and so am perhaps more able to go on geeky family history road-trips to see places over here than you are if you're in the States, so if I go to somewhere interesting (like Stanton) and take any pictures or find anything out, then I'll let you know.

Monica, thanks for the advice about the messages.  Smiley Any ideas about why I can' t reply?  Huh

Sam

I think you need to have made a small number of posts on the open forum (not sure of the exact number, but not many - maybe someone else can be more specific than me  Tongue). After this you  can send/receive messages via the PM system.
