Monk Soham Parish Church
« on: Tuesday 25 September 07 02:36 UTC (UK) »

Hi

Does anyone have any idea why the parish records for Monk Soham start at 1712, when if my info is correct, the church had been around long before that. Were baptism's & such held performed elsewhere or records perished???

I have an entire family who lived in Monk Soham in the 1500-1600's.

Would there be any readable headstones in the church cemetery for that period

Could I be that lucky........ Undecided

Apart from the church having originally been the home of Monks from Bury St Edmunds (hence the Monks part of the name) and there having been a bit of an argy-bargy in the early 1600s I do not know why the parish records are not available until 1712.

Headstones came later and really 'blossomed' in Victorian times, before that there were small wooden or iron crosses/markers in churchyards.  I doubt that anything would remain in the churchyard from the 15/1600s.

Have a look at Simon's comments on

Thanks SM

I have seen this site. This is why I wonder if baptism's etc were performed elsewhere given that this parish was a Monk's retreat.
