Old pub in Childrey
« on: Tuesday 25 September 07 09:49 BST (UK) »

Help I'm in search of the Pubs ,Beer houses etc kept by the ancestors. James FROUD is listed on the 1871 census as a beer retailer and shoe maker Main Street, Childrey he is at the same address in 1881 as a shoemaker and publican. Has anyone any idea what the pub's name was and if it still exists? Many thanks

Hi Trees

Just had a quick look at a map of Childrey of 1883 and couldnt see a pub an the map, perhaps he just sold beer from his house. There was something called Red Huh,  but couldnt make out the last word . If you want to have a look the village is on this link

Local directories for the period show a pub called the Hatchet - but run by other people. There are also up to three 'beer retailers' (inlcuding Mr Froud). Beerhouses could simply be someone's front room - not all would have names as pubs but many did.

The pub is The Hatchet. It does still exist and is a big part of village life. My son lives in the village so we go there quite often.

Further to this there was another pub in Childrey named The Crown, which opened in 1709 and according to my book on Childrey James Froud Shoemaker & beer retailer was one of the landlords. The Crown was closed in 1966, but The Hatchet is still going strong. There were many Frouds in Childrey.

Wow many thanks Tantan I thought he must simply have kept a Beer house What is your book called ? Is it still available? My husband's Gt Gran was a FROUD from Wantage so we are interested in them all. Please take a look at our web on the McMullin line descendants of Nicholas FROUD and see if any are mentioned. James FROUD's son Thomas went on to be associated with The Crispin Harwell, and The Dun Cow in Northmoor before becoming  a farmer back in Childrey

I Know Belinda married a William Robert ELSE in 1896 in Chelsea!! Please Tan tan do you know if there a landlord called WilliamElse after1901( they are still in London then) listed for the Hatchet or a landlady Belinda?

The Childrey book is titled "Childrey - A Village in the Vale of the White Horse" first published 1989, revised edition published 2003. It's certainly available in this area, probably the best place to get it at the moment is The Vale & Downland Museum in Wantage. Price is £8.99. If you live too far away I could get one & mail it to you if you wish.
I have looked at your website (very interesting) but can't see any of the names in the book at a quick glance, neither can I find the name of the landlord at the Hatchett after Ebenezer Pointer who was there in 1900. However there is a very active village history group who I might be able to find out from - will ask. Hope this helps.

Further to my earlier note and after another look in the book there is a reference to a Dickie Froud who brought the first tractor to Childrey during WW1 and apparantly he died in 1940 and was buried there. His wife was Bertha and she died in 1971. A Philip Froud bought some of the land and his son Andrew is still there today (when the book was written).
There are a lot of photos in the book and although the Crown closed as a pub its still there and now quite a nice house on the left as you enter the village. If you want to contact me direct use>david.bradfield2@btinternet.com<

That is a very kind offer send me your address through a pm and I'll send you the payment etc. I have found the original notes (dated 1990!)and can see it was a son of John who married the land LADY nothing to do with Belinda So I've followed this up this afternoon and have found that Arthur Basil FROUD brother of Belinda married Nellie POINTER in 1911 she is the wife of Ebenezer POINTER on the 1901 census at the Hatchett and Landlord Ebenezer died in 1906 and it looks like Nellie took over the license.
Phew so it would appear that Arthur B FROUD must have been Landlord from 1911-?
Perhaps you can verify all this with your local history soc. friend please.
The notes also link another  FROUD to The Leather Bottle in Challow just as I thought I was ready to go "live" with my publicans I'm up to three pages already Grin

Hello

Not really anything to do with the pub, but my dad was born in Childrey and used to talk about "farmer Froud" who he seemed to hold in high esteem.
I have some old notes that he wrote about him , if you like i'll have a look to see what he said - probably not yours but you never know.
