I found my relatives living at Cotton of Turin, in Angus on the 1841 census, can anyone tell me what that is? Thankyou

Forgot to say, numerous places across Scotland had a name that began "Cotton of" or similar.

If you go to Scots Origins website and type 'cotton' in the placenames box it should give you a list.

The Ordnance Survey definition is a bit limp.  It actually means Cottar Town, in other words a group of estate or farm houses provided for housing Cottars (farm workers).

When I inquired about the meaning of Cotton when I went to the Angus family history center, I was told that it was from the French "cote en" meaning next to and, as IMBER says, is therefore a small group of houses/cottages near a farm for the farm workers to live in (although, my family of stonemasons lived in Cotton of Red Castle: maybe they were building it!)

It would be fascinating to see what evidence Angus Family History Centre could produce to back up such a claim.  Until that unlikely event I'll stick with Cotton being a shortened form of Cottar Town.  A part transition can be found in Cottown of Balgownie near Aberdeen. There are numerous Angus examples listed on RootsWeb and one of my own ancestors stayed at Cottar Town of McKinney, somewhere in Angus. Anyone unfamiliar with the term Cottar may like to explore further by reading Burns' poem, The Cottar's Saturday Night.

Have been looking at some old maps of the Angus area, and the spelling given for the cottons is coteon - more like the French spelling for cote en than cottar.  But maybe, cottar comes from the same root as cotton or coteon - after all, they mean the same thing in the last analysis.

Link for an 1832 map is:  http://www.nls.uk/maps/early/516.html
