memories of the 1950.s needed
« on: Sunday 21 March 04 03:21 GMT (UK) »

Can anyone remember food products which went under the Brand name of "CHEF".
Namely sauces or pickles or preserves.
My grandfather was involved in these and I would love to have any information about it.
On the label of these products was a photo of a chef in uniform, Can anyone remember ?

Hi June,
yes i do remember the Chef foods.i've spent this afternoon looking for information on  the chef company.i've learnt a lot Wink
but alas havent found any articles on specific CHEF foods, although i exhausted my words to add to search engine.
i couldnt remember the actual producer of that brand, do you remember it?
was it homepride or similar?
sorry i cant help, but i would be very interested to how you get on.
i do have a few trade directories, if only we could recall the name of the actual company.

I am sure I can remember these from my childhood,  late '60s early '70s,  and I think they may have made baked beans too.  I hope I am not mixing tham up with another old favourite - Daddies.

Hi Jag and Kazza.

Its good to know some one can remember these.
My grandfather's photo was the Chef on the label.

Its one of those I was hoping to find.(Impossible I know)

Apparently there was "Chef Sauce" and "Chef Pickles". And Meat and Fruit preserves. Dont know any other name to go with this though.
It was a long shot I know.

Well I've just done a search and the only thing I could come up with was Nestle.  I think they still do some Chef sauces but probably in packet form.

You can buy an advert on www.signsof-thetimes.com/groceries3.htm

But the picture is too small for me to see a maker.

Well done Sylviaann,

I did a search as well but didn't find that site to buy signs at.  I think the Nestle make is Chef-mate and probably not the same thing.

The other thing I thought of is Collectables,  there are people who specialise in food packaging but you may have to buy at an auction.

Good Luck

Hi there

I would have thought that the most obvious place to look would be the prop department in a Film Studio.
They often recreate period drama's and would therefore have lots of sources (pardon the pun) for this type of scenery.

Anyone know an e-mail adress or web site for a studio or 'props dept'.

Your a terrific lot,
Thank you for all this imput.

The photo on the label that I "think"I  remember was
in the usual white uniform with big hat.
Last year I contacted a few museums holding various memorabilia but they couldnt help.
At that time someone  suggested  Nestle so I contacted  them but never had reply.

Apparently Grandfather created all his own recipies for meat and fruit preserves.
I have searched for his name Jabes BARTLETT in the online historical directories but cant find anything to do with his occupation as a Chef. He worked in various parts of Uk - Kent - Middlesex- Newcastle - Glasgow.
A bit of a mover you might say.

Hi June,
Has anyone suggested the Museum of Advertising? I think it's called that - they used to be in Gloucester.  They had labels for all sorts of things.  Actually I suppose any local museum too.

Hi Jan - Thanks for your suggestion.

I have tried a couple of Museums in the past but will now do a look on Google and see if I can locate an email address for the one you mention.

Thanks you
June
