Hi June,
The product wouldn't have been HOLBROOK'S by any chance, would it??

June, try http://www.tinshop.co.uk/index.php4?catCode=311 There are collectable tins for CWS (not sure what that stands for) with a picture of a chef (picture too small to really see) items such as baked beans, salad cream etc. There is an email address, so it might be worth picking their brains. Also look for sites that might deal with advertising of those times, magazines, newspapers or food trade magazines. I found a few sites that deal with memorabilia of the 50's, such as food labels etc, but no chef. People even collect banana stickers would you believe. I'll keep looking, it's quite addictive I've hit a brick wall in my own research so it keeps me out of mischief Jane

Hi Jane
Surely you remember the Co-Op
CWS - Co-Operative Wholesale Society, where you always had to give your 'divi' number when you purchased goods. Ours was 17472 and grandmothers was 10186 - I was often sent down the Co-Op to buy loaf of bread, 2lbs sugar and some eggs plus odds and ends - plus half a ton of coal to be delivered next week, etc.

Hi Jane
Yes, I did have a quick look at the scan - not seen anything like it before
The Oracle has got to think it over before replying

Yes, I remember them, As a little child I used to watch in awe as the cash pod shot across the line into a hole in a wall, then come back out again a few minutes later, when opened it contained change and receipt. Always wondered what happened the other side of the hole in the wall. There was always a chair to sit on near the counter - mum sat down whilst the assistant fetched her purchases from different parts of the shop. Bit different from today where we all collect our own purchases in a trolley then the assistant remains seated to take our money - and they call it progress.

I remember chef brown sauce as that is the sauce which was used by a lot of chippies in the Glasgow area. I just loved it.

Hi June
If I remember right it just had his face on it and he had a moustache. The co-op had a manufacturing plant in Shieldhall, Govan Glasgow where the sauce may have been made and I will phone my sister in law later on to see if she knows anything as she used to work there many years ago.
