Through process of elimination over the past few years, I have stopped looking for my grandfather's family as I believe these are the one. However, I can't move further ahead, it's driving me crazy. I'm looking for help. Here's my info:

John Doran, born 1830 in Carlisle (don't know his parents)
John's wife, Sarah, born 1834 (don't know her maiden name or parents)
James (my grandfather) born 1878 in Carlisle, (don't know when he died)
Frank, born 1871 in Carlisle, (don't know anything else)
William, born 1874 in Carlisle, (don't know anything else)
Sarah J, born 1880 in Carlisle, (don't know anything else)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1841 has only one John Doran for Cumberland (provided there are no transcription errors for others)

1841 HO107; Piece 159; Book: 9A; Folio: 7; Page: 10

Priestgate (?) Workington

Mary Doran 40 yrs
Margaret 15 yrs
Isabella 14 yrs
Mary 12 yrs
John 9 yrs

all born in county   - if this is him- mother is probably Mary although no relationships are shown.

John Doran born Carlisle- wife Sarah, child Ann.

now we have to question if this is the same John as found earlier.

transcribed as John Daron 22 yrs weaver born Carlisle in lodgings - again you will have this and so I suppose this is where the mystery happens.

Free BMD has a marriage but it is 1862 -John Doran and Sarah Sloan Whitehaven registration district.

I am really sorry here- just checked with Family Search which I should have done earlier and there is a John Dorian -parents Richard and Mary baptised Workington. Better get back to the drawing board and I won't post unless i find something useful.  Embarrassed

well sorry again for that and here I am with hopefully a bit more info- sadly not much.

As I said before there is an 1861 entry for a Robert and Sarah with a daughter Ann. (Botchergate, Carlisle)

1871 RG10; Piece: 5218; Folio: 114; Page: 14
has this family:
Collier Lane, Botchergate Carlisle

John Doran 40 yrs  carter b Carlisle
Sarah 37 yrs b Carlisle
Ann 11 yrs b Leadgate Cumberland
Robert 3 yrs b Carlisle

I was put off after the first fiasco because of the children's names not comparing with your list.
However it does seem to be supported by:

1881 RG11; Piece: 5155; Folio: 131; Page: 14

6 Davidsons Lane where John, carter is living with the family you describe.

Family Search has some of these children's baptisms plus Ann, Robert and an Ellen.
Free BMD has Ellen's birth (1863) and death (1867).

There is no sign of Ann (as Doran) and Robert Doran is a juvenile offender in Northumberland at RG11; Piece: 5097; Folio: 91; Page: 6

1891 RG12; Piece: 4287; Folio 13; Page 20

8 Collier Lane
John Doran 62 yrs  general labourer
Sarah 50 yrs
Robert 22 yrs  general labourer
Frank 19 yrs  ditto
William 16 yrs tailor's apprentice
Sarah Jane 10 yrs
all born Carlisle

1901 RG13; Piece: 4865; Folio: 163; Page: 32
Robert is married to Susannah with a family

can't find others sorry - in Free BMD or censuses. Perhaps they emigrated?
You could find Sarah's maiden name from a birth certificate of one of the children - then look for marriage etc.

Could sarah's surname not be sloan and they married after the birth of ann and the census?  Wouldn't be first time a couple married after the birth of their firstborn (or the last) - in fact I think it was almost the norm that the wife was gravid.

I agree bob - could be Sloan. There were so many variations on Doran but the latter ones I quoted are consistent with Carlisle.

Can I put my research scientist hat on and pose the question  " both claim to born in carlisle but married in whitehaven?"
We think Ann might have been born before this  so did we "elope" 30 miles down coast to get married whilst 1 mother or another looked after child.
Second question. why go as far as whitehaven when ther are many other registration districts more accessible.  Were there relatives of one or tother to support them in whitehaven.
I'me not knocking my own theory on the sloan bit, I'm only asking the questions I would ask with my own equally difficult graham family.

The original Doran I found was Whitehaven so that is a strong candidate for the Whitehaven marriage.
The Carlisle John Doran only appears in 1861, with a possiblity in 1851 - he is a lodger then so no family connections. This may well be where Alison is stuck but until she comes back we don't know.
There could be a possibilty with a marriage 1859- possible spouses,  John Doron and Sarah Hayton but that is Cockermouth.
Perhaps Alison will tell us whether we are getting nowhere as she feels she has done.
