Jane Hogg c. 1791
« on: Tuesday 25 September 07 20:05 BST (UK) »

Gadget found me two possibles for the parents of this lady:

9th March 1788 Tynron, DFS,  William Hogg and Florance Dempster
31 August 1788 Canonbie, DFS, William Hogg and Ann Graham

So, thinking out loud, as it were:

Her census details according to the 1841 census of Edinburgh, are for a birth approx. 1791. In 1851 she appears to be a prisoner in Edinbugh prison, and her d.o.b. is given as 1789 (in Dumfries). It makes one of these births look likely, but which one? No sign of her in 1861, so I assume she was dead by then. Damned inconvient time to die as Scotland's People only has deaths from 1855 onwards, and she's not there, so she must have died between 1851 and 1855. Can't find her parents from her death, therefore.

William and Florence have 3 daughters listed on Scotland's People, Agnes (1786), Jean (1788), and Marrion (1808). The 20 year gap looks a bit odd, so there must be others.

William and Ann have Jean (1783), Jannet (1788), Margaret (1791), Robert (1795), Anne (1797), and William (1800).

I cannot find Jane's marriage to James Lightbody on Scotland's people. But we know from her daughter (Jane Lightbody)'s death entry that they were indeed a couple. James presumably died before 1841.

I think that covers everything. Any suggestions?

Just to bring this one up to date I have ruled out this one:

Jane (Jean) Hogg 31 August 1788 Canonbie, DFS, William Hogg and Ann Graham

That lady married a John Little.

I'm still looking for Jane Hogg born 1789 Dumfries, died after 1851 in Edinburgh.

I think I'm down to two possible sets of parents, George Hogg/Janet Fingland and William Hogg/Florence Dempster.
