I have bean searching for a Lucy Bean born 1819 in Palgrave, found no Beans but did find Bane her name Lucy born 1819 father Robert. While her marriage cert gives her name as Bean is it possible that it should be Bane,

Accept all name variations - remember the clerks of the day wrote what they thought they heard - there were no hard and fast rules for the correct spelling of names.
In 'Suffolk speak', Bane would sound like Bean, they would almost have a 'y' sound in the middle.  Sort of Bay-yun or Bee-yun.
Our friend Bob Malster wrote a wonderful book on the Suffolk Dialect and Accent and he says, it's almost impossible to write down the accent for other folk to understand.

When you were going through the PRs for Palgrave, did you find many instances of the name Bane (or Bean) ?

Keep all references - just in case  Grin

I have 2 Bean marriages in Wortham not far from Palgrave, they are
Sarah Bean married Henry Smith 13th July 1807
Hannah Bean married John Diggins Senior 19th June 1794

Don't know whether that helps or not.

There is no doubt that Bean and Bane were both used by the parish clerks.  My 3rd great grandfather John Bean from Wortham had four children.  David was born in Redgrave and the clerk there recorded his name as Bane.

The Sarah Bean who married Henry Smith 13th July 1807 had a daughter Eliza and she married David 15 Feb 1842 at St John the Evangelist, Westminster.

I am trying t piece together the Beans when they were in Wortham and would like to hear from anyone who has any links with them.

Hi All

I too have a Bean/s family member that I can find nothing about only her name - Mary Anne Beans born c1813 Needham Market Suffolk England.
Have search countless web sites only to come up empty handed.
I have her marriage to Thomas Baker in 1832 in Chrishall, Essex. I have them on the 1851, 1861, 1871 census.

Does this Mary Beans fit anyone's tree.

Cheers from DownUnder

Hi Susan

Turns out I have the right Thomas Baker but the wrong wife. Her name is Mary Ann but not Beans. I had a gentleman give me information on the Bean side and it didn't add up. According to the 1841, 1851, 1861 census for Essex Thomas Baker was born c1806 St Osyth Essex and Mary Ann Huh? born c1813 Needham Market, Suffolk. They had a total of 8 children between 1832-1855 all born in St Osyth. In the 1861 census they have 2 grandchildren living with them. The grandson John Baker is my husbands line.

Sorry I couldn't be any help with the Bean family.

Cheers

Hi Susan
Lucy bean (b. 1819) was the saughter of Robert Bean (b. Wortham 7.11.1779)
and Lucy Bean (nee Cook) b. Palgrave 11.1.1784)
I have not found any earlier Beans or Banes but have traced the Cooks back
another generation.
I have a copy of a very early photograph of Lucy Bean and her mother (1784)
and can send you a scan by e-mail if you care to contact me.
