Thomas DAVEY - Birth Record
« on: Thursday 14 August 08 01:32 BST (UK) »

I'm looking for a birth date and location in Cornwall for a THOMAS DAVEY born approx 1812.  He married a Hannah Pearce in 1833 and had one child M.A. Davey before emmigrating to the USA around 1836.

Hi mer,

A big welcome to RootsChat and the Cornwall Board  Grin

Can you please tell us where they married and any further information you may have on the family in Cornwall. I am not having any luck locating a likely marriage in Cornwall in 1833. What is MA Davey's name and where and when was he/she born? The names Davey and Pearce are extremely common in Cornwall and we would need more to have any hope of finding Thomas.......Kris  Cheesy

Kris:

I have one source who says Thomas Davey and Hannah Pearce were married in Woodbury, Devon, England, however I know for certain they were both originally from somewhere in Cornwall.  When they came to the United States they settled in a part of Wisconsin that was almost entirely made up of immigrants from Cornwall as there was mining in the area.

I believe that Thomas had a brother already in the US named Samuel Davey.

OK mer,

I see the marriage (extracted record) is listed on the IGI 11 July 1833 Woodbury. I also note the baptism of Matilda 20 Apr 1834 at Woodbury. Being extracted records they records should be trustworthy. I can see this will be a very difficult task without more to go on. I wonder if the full marriage entry may help if it lists either party as of somewhere other than Woodbury. Also witnesses may help. I suggest you try a records office request on the Devon Lookup Requests Board and hope someone is able to view the record for you and provide the complete entry. Where is the born about 1812 gleaned from? Unfortunately both of these names are so terribly common. Do your Wisconsin Death Records list parents names by any chance?.....Kris

mer,

I am trying to look at your Wisconsin Census of which I am not very familiar. I do note in 1840 by what I am looking at there would appear to be another Male in the household. The entry for Thomas states 1 male aged 20-30, 1 male aged 40-50, 1 female 20-30 and 2 females under 5. This would seem to tally with Thomas, Hannah and the 2 daughters in 1850. Do you have any idea who this other man may have been? Also did the family immigrate with any other family? I note Thomas was not a miner although certainly in a mining area - he was listed as a merchant aged 39 in 1850, a watchmaker aged 47 in 1860, a Jeweler (sic) aged 57 in 1870 and a Jeweller aged 68 in 1880 so seems fairly consistant with a birth 1811-1813............Kris  Cheesy
