Shutlane Head
« on: Wednesday 26 September 07 21:41 BST (UK) »

I came across a place called Shutlane Head on a Staffordshire record today. What kind of place is that? Is it a hamlet SW of Newcastle-under-Lyme? I assume it is quite near Keele. What is it like today? It was on a birth record in 1840. Does anyone know what the area would have been like during the Victorian period?

Thank you, Jake, for pointing out its nearness to Swynnerton, but I wonder what the place was like in the 1800s and today.

Thank you, Ricky, for pointing out where Shutlane Head is, but I wonder whether someone can give any details about what the place was like in the 1800s or as it is today.

Thank you so much, Ricky, for your very helpful map. Although it does not mention other places around, it does show the Brick and Tile works very close. The person I was thinking about was Thomas Randles who married the daughter Sarah of the owner of a brick and tile works and manufacturer, William Brough. It may well have been the same place, although in the census William Brough is connected with Rosemary Hill and later at the Farm, Keele. Perhaps someone will throw more light on these places.
Thanks again,
Alex

Hi Alex

if you go to this site

http://www.british-history.ac.uk/mapsheet.asp?pubid=270

click on maps and enter the name of the place you are looking for, it should bring it up. Then you can zoom in or out, and to move left or right or up and down , go to the edge of the map and left click.

regards
