Hi I have just found a christening date for a great great great grandparent, George Barnsley. He was christened 7th May, 1823 at St Andrews, Penrith, Cumbria. Could somebody please do a search for me? I also have his marriage date, to Anne Gates, on 27th March, 1847, but it was in West Derby, Derby, England. To further complicate matters, he died in a mudslide digging for alluvial gold in Campbell's creek, Victoria, Australia, but I have the death certificate. He certainly moved about! Jason

Hi Just to avoid confusion - West Derby is a part of Liverpool. In Lancashire. Can you confirm how you know his birth date and whether you have any census records for him? The only suitable couple I can find in 1851 are from Sheffield so obviously not correct. What children did they have? When did he go to Australia? Getting the marriage certificate would be helpful. If you have it then who does it give as his father? Death certificates in Australia give a lot of info too I think. Give as much information as you have - makes life easier!! Andrea

There is a George Barnsley of the right age for your baptism record in Penrith in 1841. He is a shoe maker's apprentice. HO107/4 District 1 F14 p24 I assume that you found the baptism on www.familysearch.org That does name the parents of this particular George. I am just not sure how you know this is your George! Hi Suey and Sillgen Sorry for any confusion. I am after information that might be on his christening records that may tell me about his father and mother. The information about his christening was on the family search, as was the marriage, but I already had the marriage particulars. I know that George and his wife, Anne Gates, plus two of their children, Thomas Scott Barnsley and John Gates Barnsley plus her parents John Gates and Anne Gates, nee Scott, all came out to Australia on the Tippoo Sahib in June 1852. Her parents were also mentioned on the 1851 census for Uffington, Stamford, Lincolnshire as schoolmaster and school mistress. George had one child, Mary Anne Scott who was born in 1851, but who died in March 1852 in Stamford Lincolnshire. They had two other daughters born in Australia and one, Anne Scott Barnsley, born 19/5/1855, was my great Grandmother. George owned a hotel in Campbell's Creek called the John O'Groats and died in a mudslide digging for alluvial gold, 6 years after arriving in Australia. All of the adults were dead by the mid 1860's, with Annie Barnsley, who had remarried a guy called Kemp, being killed in a sexual manner which led to an inquest and a lot of newspaper comment. What I am trying to do is go back as far as I can. There is not much more I can relate about George, and any help would be appreciated Jason46

I have now found them in 1851 and see where you are coming from. Unfortunately, unless the vicar was really dedicated, there is not likely to be much more information in the baptism record than appears on the IGI. It might give an occupation or an address. Have you checked the batch number to see if there are siblings? Click on it and then just put the surname and parents' names in the search form and it should bring up any other kids on that film. You can get the original film of the register to search at your nearest LDS centre - worldwide and listed on familysearch. That will probably show burials as well which is always useful and you can often find many extra family members. I will be up near Penrith in a month's time so if you find an address I could take a photo for you if it still exists. Andrea
