Brophy
« on: Thursday 27 September 07 16:04 BST (UK) »

I am looking for any information on Patrick Brophy who married Mary Anne (not sure of her maiden name).  One son that I know of is, is Thomas Elliott Brophy baptised in Cape Town South Africa in 1887.

I would appreciate any help as I am not sure whether Patrick was born in South Africa or Ireland.

Also does anyone know when the Irish started leaving for South Africa and was that the final destination of the ship or did it go on to Australia or somewhere else.

Hi there, welcome to Rootschat.
As a subscriber to ancestry24 you have access to the records concerning the Brophys - i suggest you apply for the Death Notice of Thomas Elliott and Patrick and this will give clues as to his place of birth - it looks as though it may have been South africa as there is a marriage record for a Patrick Brophy in 1837 in Cape Town, possibly his father.
As for the Irish arriving and departing .... that is a good question that is veryy difficult to answer! i am in the middle of trying to sort out Irish/ Natal ancestors for a friend who wants an Irish passport. What a difficult task as all the info I have from them is incorrect! The ?x greatgrandfather arrived in Natal about 1845!!!
i will pass this on to empea as she lives in Cape Town and may be able to help you  - unless  you live in Cape Town and can get to the archives.
