Railway Street, Hertford
« on: Thursday 27 September 07 18:09 BST (UK) »

I wonder if anyone can help, please.
My gt grandfather died in 1880 at Railway Street, All Saints, Hertford.   His occupation given on his death certificate is Publican.   I wonder if anyone knows if there was a public house at this address in 1880.   It's probably a long shot but you never know .....
Thanks in advance.

Hi rosa

Looking on the 1881 census there are 5 pubs or Inns on Railway Street Hertford

(1)Flower Pot
(2)Diamond Inn
(3)Duncombe or Runcombe Arms
(4)Black Horse
(5)Red Cow Inn

Not sure of the spelling on number 1 and number 3

regards

Hi Rosa,
Certainly the Duncombe Arms is still there under the same name. The others I can check on.

Thank you both very much.   There would have to be 5 pubs, wouldn't there !!!   I'm sure I've seen a list of publicans somewhere but can't think where for the moment.
