Chapel en le Frith Workhouse - 1881 ** COMPLETED**
« on: Friday 28 September 07 17:08 BST (UK) »

Hi
Is there anyone out there who can either look up or give me advice on where I can get information about people who spent time in the workhouse.  There is an Agnes Jones in my family tree and I believe that I may have found her in the workhouse on the 1881 census.  The only problem is that I don't know where to look for records other than the Records Office to prove if it's the right person.  Easier said than done because I don't live in the UK.  Anybody any answers.
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

According to the workhouse site
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?ChapelEnLeFrith/ChapelEnLeFrith.shtml

Quote
Records
Derbyshire Record Office, New Street, Matlock, Derbyshire. Few records survive. Holdings include: Guardians' minute books (1918-1930); Births (1914-48); Deaths (1914-43); Creed registers (1902-25); etc.
Undecided

Might be worth contacting them though? If you follow my link you'll have a link to their e-mail address.

Hi Sarah
Have you looked at the original image for the census? Only asking because on the transcripts there seems some confusion over her birthplace - where was your Agnes born?
In case you haven't seen the original this is what it appears to say

Chester Stockport then above Do (for Derbyshire) and then what is transcribed as Rosesters? appears to be R(?o)po(?r or s) ley

Hi Jan
No I haven't seen the original transcript.  My Agnes was born in Rowsley, Derbyshire.  So it could be possible that it's her.  The age is correct but I could do with finding out if there are any records of family etc.

Sarah

I've looked again and what I thought was a p is actually the upstroke of the t from Stockport running up to the joining stroke of what is almost certainly a w rather than the other bit of the p followed by an o (hope that makes sense Cheesy), so Rowsley it almost certainly is.

Jan Wink

Did you notice the little Thomas H Jones age 3months after Agnes - that could explain why she was there. He is born Chapel en le Frith so probably born in the Workhouse.

Oh Jan you are fabulous.  No I hadn't noticed Thomas H Jones after but like I say I have never seen the original copy.  Do you have the original copy on disc or is it online?  I'll look into this info now.
Thanks for your help

Happy to have helped a little Cheesy
I've had a look for Thomas in 1891 but haven't found a definite. Did Agnes marry? If so he may not be Jones in 91.  It would be nice confirmation to find her and Thomas together.
I've PM'd you about the image

Hi Jan & Sylvia.
Yes Sylvia that is the Agnes and Thomas that we have found.
Agnes married Samuel Wolstenholme 1886 at Barton upon Irwell, Lancs.  In 1891 they lived at Worsley, Lancs with their daughter Louisa aged 2 (my G G Grandmother).  In 1901 Agnes has disappeared, Samuel is living with his brother at Pendlebury, Lancs and Louisa is living with her Grandfather (Agnes' father) and her Aunt at Darley, Derbyshire.  Louisa married in 1914 and she sadly died in 1922 aged 33.  My Grandma was just 2 years old.
Thanks for all the help you are giving me.  Will check my p message now.

Hi Sarah

In 1901 this could well be Agnes - as far as I can tell there is no other Agnes born Rowsley c1858 and Annie's presence seems to add confirmation. Divorce wasn't a possibility unless you were rich.

Hi Jan.
Thanks for the personal message etc.  You are very kind.  I definately think we have the right Agnes in the workhouse.  I think she was a bit of a girl.  It gets more intriguing everyday.  Thanks for the 1901 info.  I wonder if she was a bigamist?  I'm sure they weren't a rich family.  In 1901 Samuel (her husband) was living with his brother in Lancashire.  The plot thickens.
Thank you so much for all your help.  I'm out all day today so not much will get done.....unfortunately.
Speak soon

Hi Sarah
It looks as if she was a bigamist as there is a marriage for an Agnes Wolstenholme Apr qtr 1897 Chesterfield Vol7b Pg1429 with a William Armstrong on the same page. This wouldn't have been difficult as it was in a different area to her first marriage and you didn't have to provide any proof of marital status. She does seem an intriguing lady. The presence of her niece would suggest there wasn't a great falling out between her and Samuel - an amicable divorce perhaps if such had been available to them in those days.

Oh Jan you have been working hard.  Thank you.  You are an absolute darling.  Wait until I tell Mum.  We normally do this together but my Grandma passed away a couple of weeks ago so she is struggling to concentrate on anything at the moment.  I've thrown myself back into the research to keep my mind off things.
I'm still waiting to find rich blood running through the family veins.  Ha Ha
I would imagine that the children with Agnes were William Armstrongs from a previous marriage.  I'll look into that when I've finished my morning shift at work.
Sarah

Hi Sarah

The man in the picture is Robert Carver my Great Grandad (on my mum's mum's dad). Posting pictures can be tricky, there are threads to help - I'll see if I can find and post the link.

Sorry about your Grandma
