Ely Parish Register lookup
« on: Friday 28 September 07 20:54 BST (UK) »

Would someone be able to do a parish register lookup in Ely for the following:

John BERRY - christened April 19, 1770 - Ely
Samuel Berry - christened about the same time

Looking for parents of the above.
Any help would be appreciated.

Eric

Thanks for your help.  I wonder if Ely, Camb. means the town or  village of Ely or would Ely encompass many towns or villages ie. Upwell, Outwell, etc. etc.?

It's an IGI member submission, not an extracted entry, so who knows what the submitter meant.

If it had been really Ely then it should have quoted the parish, St Mary or Holy Trinity. It's also a give away that in both the IGI and the Ancestral File entries no parents are quoted - this says to me that it probably wasn't taken from a parish register, but from another source, or even totally fictitious. "Ely" would not at that time have been taken as anything other than the city of Ely

Was he non-conformist?

Hello David:

Thank you for explaining Ely relating to the baptism of John Berry.  I am not sure whether the Berrys were non-conformists or not - I don't have too many Berry baptismal records.   If they were, where would one look for such a baptismal or birth record?  Any suggestions, David?

The ancestral file entry on the LDS site gives a marriage of John Berry bap 1770 Ely to Hannah Laurence on 18 Jan 1792 in Ely (again the submitter doesn't give an exact parish) with John's burial being in 1819 in Upwell, Cambs. But the burial index on the Cambs FHS site gives no such burial.

You might consider checking these out to see if (i) the entries exist at all, and (ii) if so if any further detail is provided

Many non-conformist registers are on the IGI, but equally many are not, so it's necessary to know which church they attended so that you can find out where the records are held

Regards

David

Hello David:

Thanks, David - will check it out.  Apparently, they were married  in Holy Trinity, Ely.  It was indicated that they were both of that parish but there was no mention of parents.
