O'Reilly/Reilly
« on: Saturday 29 September 07 05:23 UTC (UK) »

Hi all

Does any one have any ideas on how to trace Patrick Reilly's parents? They were

Terrance Reilly (laborer) and Catherine Baxter. Patrick was born in Co Cavan and

married in Dalkeith, Scotland in 1890 to Bridget Sauil. That's all the info I have on

them.

Thanks

The parents marriage certificate will list their residences at the time of the marriage (not nec. the place they were born or reared) and fathers' names and occupations. Catholic marriages came under civil registration in 1864 while Protestant ones started in 1845. For earlier records you need to know the religion and where they lived so that you can find the nearest church and then check to see if the records you need still exist.
Did the parents also go to Scotland? If they died in Scotland there might be more information on their death certificates,

thanks for replying aghadowey

All I know is that Patrick was 26 when he married in Scotland in a Roman catholic Chapel in 1890 and his father Terrance was deceased.

It's possible that Patrick was born just before 1864 and you won't be able to get a birth certificate for him.
Here's a place to start with (from IGI):
John Reilly born 2 May 1864 Ballyconnell, Cavan, Ireland
Rose Ann Reilly born 27 June 1866 Ballyconnell, Cavan, Ireland
(parents Terence/Terrence Reilly & Catherine Baxter).

Ballyconnell would be the registration district not the actual townland. If you get one of these certificates it will give you the name of the townland they lived in. (It will not give date of parents' marriage).
Now you need to try to locate the records of the Catholic church where there might be other records, including a baptism for Patrick.

IGI is International Genealogical Index part of LDS site. LDS (Latterday Saints commonly known as Mormons) have free website at www.familysearch.org.
It should be one of the first places you check for possible leads on research. They have 2 types of records- submitted and extracted. Extracted records are taken from things like vital records, church records, etc. (but there can be transcription mistakes) and submitted records which are to be treated with extreme caution and need to be verified.
On LDS site you can also check things like their catalog to order microfilm to be used at your local LDS library and also placenames, etc.

To follow up on the previous note/suggestion...

You can use the IGI information for the siblings to obtain a copy of their birth records.  It may contain useful information to help you get more specifics on location.

You can obtain their records from the Superintendent Registrar in either Cavan town or Roscommon at --> http://www.groireland.ie/fees.htm

Midway down the page is the link to a page containing the needed form ("Apply for cert").  At the bottom of the page are the addresses you would need.

For a frame of reference, the turnaround for a request from the Boston area using the Cavan office is generally about 2 weeks time, and they've been quite helpful.

Once you have more specifics on the birth, you can attempt to pinpoint the RC Parish where further records may exist. --> http://www.catholicireland.net/pages/index.php?nd=60

My research has all been in the Diocese of Kilmore.

You may also try getting a death record for Terrance when you have a better location, although that may just get you an approximate age and cause of death.

Good luck.
