Alice Elizabeth ROYLE or HIGSON (of Brinnington)
« on: Sunday 30 September 07 04:45 UTC (UK) »

Looking for the baptism of Alice Elizabeth ROYLE in Stockport c1836. She married William RIDGWAY in Heaton Norris in 1857, where her father is noted as Charles HIGSON. The couple lived in Brinnington.
This suggests she had a previous marriage to a ROYLE; I haven't found evidence of that so far.
It may also be that she was illegitimate, and so had two names.
I can't find her on either the 1841 or 1851 census under either name, which is driving me nuts.
Hopefully someone out there can help!
Regards

Hi Steve
I know exactly how you feel.  My great grandmother Elizabeth Barnett had two marriage certs as well, one as Barnett the other as Warburton.
She was born in wedlock and christened Barnett, so I was baffled why she was called Warburton.  I later discovered by census that her grandparents were Warburton.  I know she lived with them for a time, but her mother was there also.
I also discovered that by a fluke the surname of the girl on the certificate immediately before Elizabeth's in the same church was Warburton.
So it is a toss up between her taking her grandparents surname, or the registrar making a mistake and writing her name as Warburton.
Apart from that frustration, I cannot find her husband my Great Grandfather's birth or find him on the 1861 or 1871 census.  So I think they will have to remain one of those mysteries that will never be solved.  Undecided

However, in your case it could well be that Alice's mother was Royle and her father Higson.
I can't find a marriage of a Charles Higson to a Royle.
Nor can I find them on 1841/51.
What was Charles Higson's occupation on the marriage cert?  That might help trace him on the census. Or was he deceased?

Kind regards
Su
