« on: Sunday 30 September 07 08:55 BST (UK) »

Looking for info - John McFadyen [b. circa 1795] married to Margaret McLean [b. circa 1797].  Marriage about 1825.
They are listed on the 1841 & 1851 Census - North Knapdale, Argyll., both aged 45 with children: Duncan, Donald, Margaret, John.  To Australia separately in 1852/4. John died in Aust. 1855 - parents on his Death Cert.
Duncan McFadyen [Mariner] and Elizabeth Huh?.
Info req'd: Elizabeth's surname
John's birth date; marriage date;
Margaret's birth date; death date/place; her parents names
and any extra info would be appreciated.
regards

Hi L&J

This looks to be their marriage (or reading of Banns) entry on the Old Parish Registers:

MARGARET MCLEARN  Marriages: Spouse: JOHN DUNCAN MCPHADAN    Marriage:  18 DEC 1824  South Knapdale, Argyll, Scotland

First son, Donald (?) looks to also have been born in S.Knapdale:

DONALD MCPHADAN  Christening: 26 JAN 1826 South Knapdale, Argyll, Scotland

Have you got a list of their children and order they were born in - I couldn't easily see any births in N. Knapdale.

Regards.

From the 1851 Census, Margaret looks to have come from N.Knapdale and John from S.Knapdale.

This looks a possible christening entry for Margaret, specially with the spelling of her surname on her marriage entry:

PEGGY MCLEARAN Christening: SEP 1796  North Knapdale, Argyll, Scotland
Parents: Father: DUNCAN MCLEARAN  Mother: MARY MCCAIL

I can't easily see John's entry, but there looks like some potential siblings in S.Knapdale:

To Duncan McPhadan and Elizabeth McFarlan(e):

1. DUNCAN MCPHADAN Christening: 09 SEP 1781 South Knapdale, Argyll, Scotland
2. MALCOM MCPHADAN  Christening: 22 OCT 1789 South Knapdale, Argyll, Scotland
3. ANN MCPHADEN Christening: 18 JAN 1797 South Knapdale, Argyll, Scotland
4. DUGALD MCPHADAN Christening: 23 SEP 1799 South Knapdale, Argyll, Scotland
5. DONALD MCPHADAN   Christening: 02 JAN 1803 South Knapdale, Argyll, Scotland

Thanks Monica :- This info seems to check out . We have Donald's birth date as 1826 . Duncan 1828, Mary 1837, John 1835 + 2 daughters dec. (from John's dc.) Names may be Margaret & Elizabeth, they seem to follow family names.
We found Margaret's dc. in Australia her name is given as McFayden , parents names Duncan & Mary McLean, this ties in with your info. of Duncan & Mary McCail.
Got the Banns of John & Margaret's Banns from Scotlands People + Donalds Christening but can't get Peggy's Christening on it in 1796??

Thanks again Monica.  I found it just after I sent the message but I can't find any births for Duncan, Mary or John Jnr nor any McCail McLearan (McLearn)- McPhadan or McPhadan & McFarlan(e) marriages. L & J
