I'm trying to help a relative in Canada find info about her family who came from Dundee.
Her grandfather David Mitchell b1886 at 2 Cochrane Street Dundee emigrated to Vancouver and there married an Annie Weddell b 1887 from Glasgow.
Davids parents were John Mitchell and Engine Fitter and Isabella Robertson.
Any help no matter how small is greatly appreciated.

Just David. She has a mc showing his parents marrying in 1871 but what she's hoping for are details of any of Davids siblings or descendants.

Hi Moira
There a couple of possibilities for David in the 1891 Census, but none with John and Isabella as parents. There is a David with mother Isabella visiting family, there is a family headed up by a John and Annie, and there is a 4 yrs old David boarding with a Cameron family.
If your friend has the 1871 MC, it would be worthwhile posting the info contained there (their ages at marriage, parents' names including fathers' occupations and mothers' maiden names). This would help in finding out info regarding John and Isabella's parents/siblings and at the same time, help in finding David in the 1891/1901 censuses.
Regards.
Monica

MUST MUST remember my variants!
I think this is them in 1881 before the birth of David. Isabella is down as Elizabeth (a standard variant for Isabel/la). All the children look to have been born in Dundee:
John Mitchell 32, Mechanie Fitter At Work, b. Perth, Perthshire Elisabeth Mitchell 31, b. Dundee John Mitchell 11 Christina Mitchell 9 Willm Mitchell 8 Henry Mitchell 6 Thos Mitchell 4 James Mitchell 2 Elizabeth Mitchell 7 Mo
Address: 4 John Street, St Mary, Dundee
Some of the children showing on IGI to John and ELIZABETH ROBERTSON:
1. JOHN MITCHELL Birth: 29 AUG 1869 Dundee, Angus, Scotland 2. CHRISTINA MITCHELL Birth: 14 JUN 1871 Dundee, Angus, Scotland 3. WILLIAM MITCHELL Birth: 13 MAR 1873 Dundee, Angus, Scotland
If this is the right set of parents, they look to have had John before they married and married on 12 June just before the birth of Christina on the 14 June 1871.

Moira, you are going to have your work cut out tracing through the family from the time of David's birth in 1886 Mother Elizabeth (Isabella) looks to have died the following year, family were still living at 2 Cochrane Street when she died:
1887 MITCHELL ELIZABETH ROBERTSON F 36 ST MARY DUNDEE CITY/ANGUS 282/02 0178
The younger children that I can see from the 1881 census are all spread out. In 1891, there is a James M, 12 and Thomas M, 14 at the Dundee Industrial School for Boys at Baldoran Strathmartine, Angus.
Then there is the now likely 5yrs old (sorry, I wrote 4 earlier on) David Mitchell boarding at a Cameron household in 33 Cowgate, St Andrew Dundee.
There is also a 15yrs old Henry Mitchell, born Dundee, at the Oldmill Reformatory School, in the Parish of Newhills in the County of Aberdeen

In 1901, there is a 15 year old David Mitchell, a tailor's apprentice - scholar at the Dundee Industrial School for Boys at Downfield, Strathmartine, Angus. There are only 7 David Mitchell's showing in his age range in 1901 with a Dundee birth place, all the rest are living with parents.

This looks like Elizabeth Robertson's family in the 1861 Census. Everyone showing as born in Dundee. Mother is Catherine TAYLOR:
Wm Robertson 32, baker Catherine Robertson 33 Ann Robertson 14 Elizabeth Robertson 11 Catherine Robertson 9 Jane Robertson 7 Mary Ann Robertson 4 William Robertson 2 Margaret Robertson 6 Mo Mary Dommersnes 23, boarder
Address: 96 Overgate, Dundee
And a likely entry for John in 1861, everyone showing as born in Perth:
Elspet Balontque (Ballantyne?) 60, mother Betsy Mitchell 22, head Cathrine Mitchell 17, sister Mary Mitchell 15, sister John Mitchell 9, brother
Address: Cherry Field, Liff and Benvie, Dundee Second District.
and in 1871:
Betsy Mitchell 76 Betsy Mitchell 31 John Mitchell 22, mechanic Mary Mitchell 24 Thomas Mitchell 5
Address: Cherryfd Lane Edwards Ld, Liff and Benvie, Dundee St Mary
This looks like an entry for John's parents' marriage (or Banns) from the Old Parish Registers:
THOMAS MITCHELL Marriages: Spouse: ELSPETH BALLANTINE Marriage: 01 JUN 1835 Perth, Perth, Scotland
Moira, I'll stop now and let you go through all this lot!
Regards.
