Leather's Dairy Castle Douglas
« on: Wednesday 03 October 07 00:29 BST (UK) »

Can anyone tell me where Leather's Dairy was in Castle Douglas. Is it still there and if not what became of it?
Reason for asking is that John James Clingan married Mary McCormick/Cormick there 20 Sep 1919. Her parents appear to have had some involvement with the place.
Regards
Ian

Saw your message just as I was about to go shopping in Castle Douglas so I asked around!  It is Leathes Dairy not Leathers, and is a farm between Castle Douglas and Buittle. Buittle (pronounced Bittle!)has a good website which might help you.
Best wishes Mary

Thanks Mary.
And that explains a lot. I couldn't think of anywhere that I knew of in Castle Douglas and I couldn't think why they would be marrying there. A farm, yes that makes sense.
Thanks again

I extracted the following from Dumfries and Galloway Standard dated 20th September 1919 page 5 column F under marriages

Clingan - Cormick

On the 12th inst at Leaths Dairy, Castle Douglas by the Rev. J. M. Haddow, John James, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Clingan, Police Station, New Abbey to Mary, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cormick, Leathes Dairy, Castle Douglas.

There are also extracts of two soldiers by the name of Clingan plus photos.  I think they might be brothers of John Clingan.

Do you want me to send these.

Regards

Thanks Betty, you are a star.
And yes, both the lads are brothers, one killed in France and the other Gallipoli.
The photo I had reproduced was just a mass of blurred ink. If you have them or can get them I would really appreciate it.
Once again, thankyou.

I saw the photos in the negative form from the old newspapers.  I don't know if that is what you got.  Do you have the written extracts?

I asked if the actual newspapers are available to view.  On Saturday I will try and take a digital of the photos.

Are you aware that there is a photo hanging in the Mill at New Abbey.  I can't remember if there is a group or just one policeman.  I think Clingan was the name of the last miller there when it closed.  Might be wrong??

Hi Betty,
Yes, I have the written extracts for the two WWI lads thanks. It was impossible to get photo's the copies were so bad.
Yes John, a former Policeman, and his wife were the last people to work the mill. He shut up shop a couple of years after WWII. Last time I was down there, the Clingan family were still in New Abbey. I know at least one of the line still maintains the Police tradition as there is one currently serving in Dumfries nick.
Didn't know about the photo in te mill. Must have a look next time I'm down that way.
Thanks for your help.

Ian,

My mother was Elizabeth Clingan. John Clingan, the last miller at New Abbey Cornmill, was her grandfather.  Her father was Alex (Sandy) Clingan brother of John (Johnny), William, Robert (Bobby), May, Thomas, Edgar, Byron and Jean.

Hi Lorna,
Nice to hear from you. I sent Ray the family details as I had them along with the Clingan tree back to a probably 1600's and linking all the Clingan's in the Kirkcudbright area. Linked some Dumfries Clingan's but not all, but getting there.
From the Kirkpatrick Durham area we, the Clingan's, Spread out to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Leith and a few other places in Scotland including Orkney and England. Descendants from this lot ended up in Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Oh, also made connections between Canada and SA, SA and Aus, Aus and New Zealand as well as NZ via Edinburgh to the States, and Scot/Eng to Aus/NZ. Also had some working in Hong Kong, Iran and a few other odd places. All traced.
If you are interested will certainly give you the info if you cannot get it from Ray, and needless to say would like to hear more about your side of the family. You can always drop me an e-mail (address found elsewhere on these pages) or a personal message.
Regards
