Could someone please look up the Bristol 1841 and 1851 censuses for -
Philip Tanswell, born sometime between 1792 and 1798, possibly with his wife Susan Ann dob about 1794. Their children Thomas (dob 1835-1841) and Susan dob 1838 were probably living with them.
Also, his father -
Philip Tanswell and his wife Esther, both born about 1770 - if they were still alive.
Many thanks
Mary

Hi Daisy
Many thanks for that - how on earth did you find him with the name being incorrect?
This now confirms his age which I wasn't sure about. The information I had was that he and Susan married in 1812, which would mean he was about 14 years - and then their first child, as far as I know, wasn't born until 1835 - a long time to wait. I had no idea he was a Publican. I will post another message to see if someone can find out anything about his marriage.
Thanks again
Mary

Hi,
Glad to help
I found him in the 1841 at findmypast, then checked back at Ancestry to see why I hadn't been able to find him there and saw the mistranscription
This could be them in 1851 transcribed as Philiph TUNNELL, the page is very faded but I think it looks like TUNSWELL
1851 HO107/1952 f.83 p.6 Clifton
Philiph TUNSWELL Head Mar 53 Labourer Bristol Susan Wife Mar 57? Bonnet Maker Bristol Thomas Son U 16 Labourer Bristol
I also found him at the Historical Directories site
Pigot & Co.'s Directory of Berks, Bucks, 1844. [Part 1: Berks to Glos] page 42
TANSWELL Philip, vict. Duke of Marlboro', Upper Cheese

Hi Mary,
I have found Philip's baptism in 1798:
Philip Tanswell baptised 18 Feb 1798, St Mary Redcliffe, parents Philip and Hester.
They also had a daughter in 1796 - Mary Ann.
A William & Lydia Tanswell also had children baptised at a similar time.
A Philp and Ann Tanswell of Avon Street, had a child Lydia baptised in 1813 in the Temple church, but I cannot find any others.
No luck with a marriage.
Nell

Hi Daisy and Nell
You have both been so helpful. Daisy that is him in 1851 - I do wish they would get the name right! I thought they had a daughter Susan in 1838 but as she doesn't show up in 1841 or 51 it looks as though she may have died.
Nel - many thanks for Philip's baptism. I had his mother as Esther - so now know it was Hester. Their daughter Mary Ann is news to me. What is interesting is that Philip and Ann had a child Lydia in 1813. This fits in with the marriage date I had of 1812 (when Philip was 14 - is that possible?). It seems a big gap between Lydia and Thomas in 1835 but of course there may have been other children.
Again many thanks for your help.
Regards Mary

Hi Mary,
Don't discard the Esther yet - I have a lady in my tree who varies between the two depending on who filled in the information!
It was legal to marry at the age of 14. What bothers me though is the fact that I cannot find any of their other children.
Philip may have died in 1853 - a death is registered in Clifton RD Mar qtr 1853 6a 76.

Hi Nell
Thanks for that. I am assuming that Philip and Ann, the parents of Lydia (1813) are the same as Philip and Susan Ann. As you say, it's strange about there being no other children. I am wondering if the marriage date I had of February 25th 1812 had the year transcribed incorrectly. It was given to me third hand so I'm not sure where it came from originally.
There are always these puzzles turning up in family research. Sometimes they get resolved and sometimes not. Hope this one does!
Regards Mary
