Hughes in Scotland moved to Lockwood, Huddersfield. Census look up please!

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone can help me I'm looking for Edward Hughes (1851 in Penninghame) who moves down to Huddersfield in Yorkshire after 1881.

I belive he married Mary Muir or Wilson (1849 Penninghame) in Penninghame and had a possible 5 children

James 1868
James Hughes 1868
William Muir Hughes 1873
Janet Hughes 1875
Robert W Hughes 1879
Peter Hughes 1882 (My ancestor)

All born in Newton Stewart and possibly moved to Lockwood Huddersfield with the parents after 1881.

Can anyone help me with further details of this family including the parents parents who were possibly Irish?

Thanks for the info thats really useful!

Hmm Irish Peter seems too old to be the father and Jean Findlay seems too young to be the mother of Edward. Methinks some futher investigation is required!! I'll see if I can get into some BMD information

The Census image most definately shows Peter as Head of Family and Jean as his wife.  Must have been  a second marriage for him.

A Chelsea Pensioner usually refers to a British Soldier who has spent time in the Royal Hospital in Chelsea.  I am sure that if you posed this question on the Military Board, there will be any number of experts who can give you lots of information as to what Peter may have gotten up to.

I do think he was around at least until 1868 as I belive after a little bit of nosying around on the IGI numbers that he had more children, Isabella, Matilda and Peter after 1861.

Perhaps there is a 1871 census?

I think Peter Jr was born in 1868 and also moved to Huddersfiled with his brother as he may be there in 1901

I'm just confused as to his wife at the moment.

Theres a Jane Finlay (born Ayrshire) about in 1851 living in the household of William Cowen in Anwoth, age 22
Then theres a Jean Lindley age 26 Living (and married) to Peter Hughes in 1861 with 3 children.
The mother of the children in the IGI number is Jane Finlay...
I'm guessing they are the same person, and both her and Peter are lying about their ages!
