Llewellyn family in Pembroke
« on: Wednesday 03 October 07 20:52 UTC (UK) »

Looking for information on a James Llewellyn who was a shipwright. He had a son David born about 1809 with the census records showing he was born in Pembroke.

James is not shown as deceased on David's marriage certificate in 1842 but I cannot find James on the 1841 or 1851 census records.

Not a lot to go on I'm afraid.....but here's hoping.

Regards

Have you thought to look at any other ship building area such a Devonport?

1861 Pater (Pembroke Dock) RG9/4156 folio 36 pg 14
George Llewhellen head mar 36 shipwright b. Pembroke
Ann wife 36 b. Lawrenny
Edwin son 7 months b. Pembroke Dock
William H brother unm 42 shipwright b. Pembroke Dock

baptisms from IGI batch C082911 St Mary's Pembroke (St John's, Pembroke Dock didn't exist until 1840s)
all to James and Elizabeth Llewellyn
William bp 27/9/1816
George bp 9/4/1823
Ann bp 20/4/1821
James bp 29/12/1819

No sign of a David in that batch but there are problems with the IGI before 1813 in Wales as it often assumes a patronymic naming pattern, making the usual searches useless.

possible death reg for James

James Llewhellyn sept qtr 1858 Pembroke vol 11a vol 391

several possibles for Elizabeth between 1851 and 1861.
I'm having no luck finding the family in 1841. Could be they have been mistranscribed.

Pembroke Dock was, the church of St John the Evangelist wasn't. It was consecrated in 1848 so, although births for this family might have been in Pembroke Dock, the baptisms would be elsewhere.

Sorry my comma was confusing.

You got me checking now - 1814 was the start of the naval dockyard according to Wikipedia, but Paterchurch was around long before that. But, I did realise while looking, that the places of birth for William and Ann in 1851 should have read Pembroke Ferry, St Mary's.

Hope it's the right family now - what census entries do you have for David?

Thank you Osprey and Lambkin. Very kind of you to take the time to do a look up for me.  It seems as it could well be the correct family but it is difficult to be sure as David by the 1841 census was living in Cardiff and working as a tailor.

On the 1841 census it just states born out of county. 1851 states born Madllhey (cannot find this place possibly spelt wrong) Pembrokeshire. 1861 says born Parish of Correy Pembrokeshire ( again cannot find this parish).1871 states born Larmy Pembrokeshire ( cannot find this place.) 1881 says born Pembroke Dock.

On the 1861 census he is shown as a Baptist Lay Preacher and on all others as a Tailor.

Can you suggest which parish register to look for David's baptism hoping I can connect him with the family you have found.

Many thanks again for your efforts

mmm, doesn't seem to ever so sure about his place of birth, does he? I rather like the one from 1881 as it ties up with the family I found, but...

1851 - could be Mathry, Martletwy?
1861 - Carew?
1871 - Lawrenny?

Think I'd go for the baptisms from St Mary's, Pembroke to start with. This gives you the whereabouts of the records

A trip to the record office in Haverfordwest proved successful. David was baptised in  Dec 1806 in the parish of Martletwy. He was the illegitimate son of James Llewelin and Elizabeth Grunna.

IGI have him shown under his mothers name.

If this is the same James and Elizabeth who are shown in the 1841 and 1851  census records living in Front St Pembroke Dock then they must have married after the birth of David.

Looks like I need to find a marriage record next?
