If you suspect relatives died during the Cholera epidemic in Dumfries you may like to see the memorial at St Michaels.

Hiya,
Not that I know of? There maybe mention of people in the OPR for St Michaels or surrounding parishes.

Hi Boogie,
This is the county town of the beautiful verdant county of Dumfriesshire (now Dumfries & Galloway) in bonnie Scotland.
Home to Rabbie Burns, red brick, freestone quarries, luuurrrvvvvley creamy ice cream, and breath taking sunsets.
Do I sound biased?

Hi Pam, Cholera struck the village of Galt,North Dumfries Tsp. Waterloo,Ontario,in 1834.It claimed the lives of 20% of the population. My ancestors settled in this area. They were from Selkirkshire,Roxboroughshire, and Dumfrieshire.

That's a very interesting coincidence!
I don't know the %age loss in Dumfries Scotland, see if I can find the 1831 headcount. In 1769 there was 5600 souls.

Hi,
I remember seeing a few questions about the Cholera outbreak in Dumfries so when I cam across this I thought I would put it on the board for everybody to see (I just hope I manage to attach the image ok!). It is from the Chambers’s Historical Newspaper November 2nd 1832. It doesn’t give many names but every little helps.
Hope it is useful to somebody,
Emma

Hi Emma
Thanks for jogging my memory about it. Most of my ancestors left the area in 1832-33. I'm now starting to wonder if 3 x grt grandfather's elusive brother died of it. He somehow disappears around then and his wife and family were left destitute. They eventually went to Canada.

Hi Gadget,
I am actually transcribing the BMD’s in the same newspapers at the moment. I only have 3 issues though there are only a few entries. I have just finished he death of which there are 199 in the three issues. There are a few Dumfriesshire people so you never know you might find your ancestor. What was his name? I’ll have a look for you.
I am going to put them all on our website for people to view once I have finished transcribing them all. There is also a list of Scottish Bankrupts as well as crimes etc. so it could prove quite interesting.

Hi Emma
He was Samuel Burgess, b. in 1780s. I thought I'd found him once, living with a staymaker called Grace in Sanquhar but his age at death and 1851 census were way out. Other things fitted but his wife, Euphemia and their children, went off to Canada and she described herself as a widow
Grateful for anything that might help find what happened.

Sorry Gadget, I haven't found anything but then it is only 3 months of deaths and it seems to be the upper echelons of society that have made it into the newspaper. If I come across him at all I will let you know.
I think I should start a list of “missing people” to keep by my desk! I seem to be collecting a lot of people that I can’t find. I have one John Smith who keeps moving around!!!

This is reminiscent of a similar incident which took place in North Dumfries,Ontario Canada,in 1832-33. Many families, in order to escape the horror of this epidemic, immigrated to Canada, but alas, only to bring the dreaded disease with them. Luella,Ontario,Canada

Thanks for looking, Emma. I was hoping By the way, I think there are some Smiths in the family as well - a daughter baptised Annie P Smith Burgess
Luella - I hope they weren't mine They first went to Toronto and then spread out over Western Ontario and up to the Muskokas (?sp).
