Albert E Hemmings
« on: Thursday 04 October 07 15:26 UTC (UK) »

Hi, can anyone help me on the place and date of death of the above b Newhaven2/3/1875. He was Master of the Brighton when she collided with the Preussen in Nov 1910 and it is said due to the blame on him resulting in his Masters ticket being suspended  and damages awarded against the LB&SCR , shot himself in a Thameside pub. Suicide may be hearsay but I can't find anything on his death. Thanks Pete

  Hi Pete...

There is a recorded death of ...

 Albert E Hemmings b @ 1875 died 1911 Q3 Whitechapel.

Death falls in line with accident before hand and same birth year so possible for you Albert.

As you say the accident was 6 Nov 1910 so maybe after a lengthy enquirery. The Preussen was still visable in the water about 20 years ago but all gone now. With something like this the papers would surely have carried the story.

That looks very likely, the Boards of Enquiry and Compensation case ran through summer 1911. I can only find those in The Times. Very surprised that the death didn't get a mention. Apparently having lost his ticket he couldn't get work and the LB& SCR got away with a limited compensation of some £8K against a claim in the region of £70K. Thanks Pete

Hi Toni, I'll check Lewes Rd records on Sunday for you but I don't think we have anything. Pete
