Hi all
I have been trying to find my gr gr grandad on a census for a while now, without much luck. Can anyone help with a fresh pair of eyes??
William Murrell - Married in January 1896 to Margaret Georgina Coutts. His age on the certificate is listed as 23, giving me an approx. birth year of 1873. His father is listed as Frederick Murrell a silkweaver, and not noted as desceased on the certificate.
The marriage took place in Newcastle, however family legend has William going to Cambridge and the family from down south. William, according to the family, was born in France, as were his parents, but they lived in the UK.
William was a wine merchant when he met Margaret Coutts, but I know they were no longer together by 1901, so no chance of finding them together on the census.
I have tried all different kinds of variation on how Murrell might be pronounced and spelled, without any luck.
Any ideas, advise etc would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

The only William Murrell I can find so far on 1881 with a father Frederick is
RG11 340 20 38
but Frederick is a Store Porter, not a silk weaver.
they are in London, but William was born in Kent, and Frederick in Norfolk. The mum is Sarah, born London. No siblings. And he is a William James Murrell

Hi lizdb
I'd seen that one, it just says William on the marriage certificate. I'd kinda assumed that a silk weaver would probably have been a trade, maybe he might have started soon after?? William's son was definately a Willaim Charles but I have no evidence that William was anything other than just William.
I have nothing to cooberate the family story, other than it comes via more than one family member - but that could have been told to them all??
I'm a bit stuck really LOL

There's a Frederick Murrell in 1901 in Hackney, aged 63, b. Stoke Newington, "Silk Trunnings Manufr" (probably 'Silk Trimmings Manufacturer'). Age fits with the 1881 Frederick, although not birthplace.
