I have an address for 1851 for some of my OH's ancestors - Backhouses Walk, Old Factory, English Street, Carlisle.
I know where English Street is, but wondered if anyone knows about the old factory part of the address. The family were weavers, I presume at Dixons factory.

I don't like to advertise my private e-mail on sites. I've done that before and been inundated with SPAM and other things leading to me having to change my address.

LOL - I wasnt talking about your email address - I was referring to the strange practice of PMing information to people that everybody would benefit from ...

Why is there an option to PM if we're not supposed to use it? Like I said I wanted to send my address and I asked Rosemary for hers so that I could send her some old maps. I really don't think it's wise to tell everyone this personal info.

Sarah, I think Newf just meant - why don't you post the map on the thread - not your e-mail address.
Thanks for the maps. I found Backhouses walk, and I can just about make out where it is in Carlisle. There's a street nearby called Mill Street, which could imply there was a cotton mill near there at one time. And there's Lamplugh Works, Cotton and Woolen.
Anyway thanks again
Rosemary

Hi liz, hi Sarah
Hi all
This link is to the info on Backhouse's walk pasted while we've been exploring on Liz's original post, just incase it's of use to any one else.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,377529.15.html
Thank you for starting it Liz, I for one have been enjoying it. Well done for finding this post, too!
As for the factory, I'm just wondering. I'm sure I've seen a chimney in the middle of this lot. Can't see it on my photo's so maybe it was on one of Goeffe's links on the other post.
I only noticed it when I enlarged one of the photo's? Maybe it's the factory referred to, but I don't know what it is. You'll gather from the other post I hadn't got a map at this date, and the modern ones aren't detailed enough.
Any ideas about the chiumney anyone?
Best wishes
Emms

Hi
Not true. Now I can see it on one of mine, so I'll copy it across. It may be clearer on Goeffe's link though.
