Hi Trees

I have been looking all over the place but cannot find anything about your pub. I know the frustration as my gg grandad had one too.

I have found this link ...maybe they would be able to help with your search ...

The trap belonged to J Budd The publican ancestor's wife was the daughter of Amy BUDD I wonder if she was related to the owner there are other family names among the photographs I'm quite excited and off to send an email to the site many thanks

Hi Trees

I am so excited for you ..I did not see the bellringers ...which section is that under ...I only looked at the old pictures ... I wonder which street your pub was in , hopefully Fore street , as there are a lot of pics of it.

I am sure they will be able to investigate for you as it seems it is a very 'personal' site .... let me know ....

Hi again Trees

I don't know if this link would help ... it has historic pubs on it ...this is where I found mine . Also pub names change through the years ... (ours was the Elmfield Hotel now the Jolly Porter  Undecided Roll Eyes )

http://www.exetermemories.co.uk/EM/inns_pubs_hotels.html

The person who runs the site is a very nice guy ... he may be able to help too..

Hi Trees

It looks like that by 1851, Robert Heard was no longer in the 'pub' business. In 1851 he is a blacksmith , still in Dolton with wife and family. By 1861 he seems to have gone back to the pub business ... He is still in Dolton and is an innkeeper/farmer ... at UNION INN. I wonder if this may have been the Palmer?

Hopefully all the cottage names etc in 1841 census , may help place the whereabouts of the Palmer...

well done sherlock Deb. I saw he was back to being a blacksmith in 1851 so didn't go any further The Union looks in a similar place to the Palmer's doesn't it I've just mailed the extra information to Dolton so now its wait and see. Many thanks for the help much appreciated. You wouldn't have any ideas about The Gunsmith's Arms Beaford would you William Heard was there 1891

Hi Trees  Smiley

Just seen the photo's ...How FAB that the Union Inn still has the same name ... WOW , what a find ! lucky you  Grin

The picture in the wagon ... Budd .... it seems to say 'posting master ' under it ...i wonder if we could investigte the Budd line and see if they were post masters?

I did see the reference to the Gunsmith Arms ...but I was a little confused as I think William's occupation was a Gunsmith and not innkeeper/publican... I will look further though ....

It also seems like the Heard family followed the 'blacksmith' occupation ... I did notice that during one census some were living at the 'Heard House'.....

Quick up date from bits and pieces found on the web and from the Dolton site suggested by debusa
It seems there was a cattle market from 1700 ish with a Devon long house on the site. Robert Heard seems to be living in it in 1841 he was a blacksmith probably getting trade from the market He started selling beer from the house, probably Palmer's beer, to the cattle traders. when he realised the market was to close he converted his house to the inn it is now calling it The Union
many thanks to everyone for their help with this one ....Now anyone able to tackle The Gunsmith's Arms Beaford? I know it passed down four generations of HEARDs the first three being gunsmith/publicans but where was it It wasn't The Globe as both appear in the same trade directory in 1850. See seperate post on Devon site

Don't think he callled it Palmers I just think it wasknown as 2the house that had Palmer's ale2 in other words "Palmer's", Palmer's was a well known Dorset brewery going back to 1700.
