Hi Trees

In 1881, the Globe was run by Fanny Westcott....The Gunsmith's Arms is , of course, in the village of Beaford, nearby are two Cottages ... Chaplan Cottage and Myrtle Cottage ... Heard Families live in them. I wonder if  these names would help in your search ? Maybe the cottages are still standing!

The Globe Inn, Beaford
Address: Exeter Road, Beaford, Winkleigh, Devon, EX19 8LR [map] [gmap]

Tel: 01805 603261

I wonder if they would be able to help?

I will look for more

Hi Trees

in 1901 it seems that Robert A Heard , 33 is the innkeeper for the Gunsmith's Arms ... on census the Post Office is "next door".  No street address , i'm afraid  Undecided

Hi Debz ,
don't know how I missed these last posts  Robert A was Robert Arthur he was one of William's sons. William lived in Myrtle cottage when he was first married to Robert's daughter I have found an old map of Beaford that we picked up years back Followinf the 1901 census The enumerator goes along the main Road passes the Bible Christian chapel then the school and the school house and then the post Office then its the pub so that pins it down pretty accurately I should think any one who lives there should be able to tell us if its still standing. No the Black Smiths you have found is right in Bideford at the top of the Tarka trail Beaford is further down but its the same valley I might e mail them though it might interest them to know the existence of another pub with the same name I'm pretty sure it can no longer be a pub. The Globe is the only one that comes up when I try Beaford

Hi again Hazel and Deb, did you notice on the Dolton website 'Maps of local area' there's a map of Beaford dated 1850, not very clear, but some names of places, also when I lived in Dolton in the 40's and 50's several local women did glove making, they were sent the cut out gloves from Torrington and they sewed the two halves together, they were only paid a pittance but there wasn't much else in the way of work locally.

Yes Deb thats why I thought I'd share the news with you . I can see two Rebecca Westcotts in Beaford on the 1851 census
Rebecca daur of William and Ann b 1819 William is at the GLOBE
and John's wife b 1818 (wife of school master.
The Globe is almost opposite the Gunsmith's Arms and next but one to the School House take a look at my Web site under Occupations Publicans -Devon pubs The Gunsmith's Arms to see the position of the school & Gunsmith's The Globe is just a little bit further on and on the opposite side of the main Rd
John and Rebecca are still together in1871 so she must be the daughter of the William and Ann at the Globe wow so I can loosely add the Globe to the list of pubs how boozy is that  Grin

Hi Hazel

I was also wondering what they were... did they have insurance in those days ?  Undecided

The fact that the ref starts with QS ...do you think that they may be quarter sessions?

Deb many thanks for all this. Yes the licenses for sale of liquor were issued annually at the quarter sessions so these will be worth a look.  I have seen the Removal of John Heard but think the most important part was missing as all that was in that folder was the certificate of lawful settlement. These were issued after a settlement examination giving the person the right to reside in the named parish in this case Beaford there was no mention of Yorkshire anywhere other than the title on the folder very strange Huh I'll get the other documents out next trip to Barnstaple many thanks again.
sorry not to have replied earlier have had very little time to breath this week lol
