The Ulster Historical Foundation

Some years ago the Ulster Historical Foundation had ground floor shop premises at the junction of Fisherwick Place and Wellington Place in Belfast. Some bright spark named the shop "Familia" which proved not to be the best of ideas as people who knew nothing about Family History thought the shop was a Family Planning Centre. The Foundation's next move was to upstairs premises in Fisherwick Place where people could go if they wished to pay to have a look at the UHF data base. They've now moved to premises at Cotton Court, 30 Waring Street where they've a lot less room than they had previously. Annex 16 is about the Ulster Historical Foundation including the historical background of the Foundation and Annex 19 is about Irish Genealogy Ltd.

Makes for interesting reading, but highlights that the Assembly have not yet grasped the full importance of such services and their potential to boost the economy.

Instead of small premises, such projects should be in easily accessible, prominent and well appointed locations with appropriate funding to achieve same.

I've come across more recent information. It's in Daily Hansard - Written Answers - October 2006 - Tourism. Iris Robinson had a query for the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland regarding the research he had commissioned to establish the value of tourism linked to genealogy to the Northern Ireland economy ... Click here to read more ... Mrs Robinson was answered by David Cairns who was appointed as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State to the Scotland Office on 10th May 2005. I'm wondering what Parliamentary position he held in 2006 ... why was he answering a question in relation to Northern Ireland affairs?

There are a few threads about the Ulster Historical Foundation. I've linked this one about the Database which was started at the beginning of February 2005 and this one, which started in April 2006, "Has anyone managed to get on to UHF webiste recently?"
