I have just seen the post by EJ in the lookups, dated 17 March 2005, about Matthew Oubridge, b. 1823 Durham, d. 1876 Newcastle. I was wondering if EJ or anyone else has since found any more information about Matthew and his family?
My interpretation of the 1851 and 1861 censuses is that Matthew was first married to Ann (maiden name unknown because I can't find any marriage record). The 1851 census had Matthew Oubridge (misspelt Obridge), age 28 (Cheese Monger), wife Ann Oubridge (29) and 3 children: George (6), Catherine Jane (5) and John Matthew (1). There was also a servant Johannah Stobbart (19).
I have found a death record of an Ann Oubridge at Newcastle in 1852 (10b,12).
It seems that Matthew remarried in 1854, to his former servant Joanna Stobart (Newcastle 10b,132) and they appear in the 1861 census. It seems that Matthew and Joanna had a further 10 children together.
I would be interested in any comments, and particularly any details of the marriage between Matthew and Ann.

I would get one of the children's birth certificate
George Williams Oubridge is hard to read but registered March 1845 in Newcastle T. volume 24 page ?80 Catherine Jane Oubridge 1847 Dec ¼ Newcastle T. volume 25 page 359 John Matthew Oubridge 1849 June ¼ Newcastle T. volume 25 446
This should give you the morther's full name then maybe you can find a marriage using her name just incase there was some alternate spelling of Oubridge.

Rather than puzzle over registration reference numbers that are only required by GRO , (who created these numbers, which are not even recognised by the "home" Register Office), why not get cert/s on line from Newcastle Register site....
.. unless you prefer getting certs from "HQ" !
The Newcastle online electonic application form self-enters the appropriate ref number........ i.e. George William 1845 = STN8/70 Catherine Jane 1847 = WSG9/413 John Matthew 1849 = WSG12/35
Elizabeth Stobart 1856 STA16/295 Henry Stobart 1859 STA19/430

Michael,
Applying to the Newcastle registry office works well if you live in the UK....but if you don't it is a pain, especially the payment part.

Janis,
thanks for that.
Yes I understand the complications of currency exchanges for other reasons. . I recently wanted to transfer Euros ( only about 100)to a person in Dublin. The surcharge was going to be about 30 Euros... not on your life !
Actually getting certs from Newcastle Register Office is easy-peasy for me. The Local & Family History section of Newcastle City Library, which I frequent two or three times a week is temporarily sited in Reg Office (The Civic Centre)
But I don't want to give the impression that I frequently buy certs. To save the 7 Pounds a go, I try to get the crucial info from church records.

Matthews first wife was Ann Wilkinson and his second was Joanna Stobbart Their son John Matthew was Lord Mayor of Newcastle in1906/7 and I have a photo from a newspaper at the time . I also have seen his much overgrown grave in Jesmond Cemetery . I am married to Matthews brother Dinsdale great grandson and have done loads of research about the family but am new to roots chat and was amazed to find others interested Carole
