Adam Sturges - Ann Blackley

Hi Leicestershire

Trying to locate the origins of Adam Sturges that turns up in Bedfordshire in 1681. Have a suggestion to check out Adam who married Ann Blackley in 1679 in Rutland and possibly baptised an Adam in Tilton 13 June 1680. Does anyone have details of this? Perhaps if Ann and Adam died 1680/81 that would leave the Adam to move to Beds??? Grateful for any help even if thhis shuts down this line of enquiry.

Tim,

I have details of quite a few Adam Sturgis' in Leicestershire, not for the exact dates that you mention, but certainly for the general area - it seems to be a common name in the Sturgis clan here.  Most of the ones I have are from Billesdon, but Tilton (on-the-Hill) is only a few miles away.  Have attached what I have and hope it helps - let me know if it does and I can then add some of your details to the end of mine.

Your clan seems to far back for me at the present. I have an Adam and Elizabeth that turned up in Beds. The first event I have is the marriage in 1681 followed by the christening of 12 children from 1682 to 1704 and finally Adam died in 1720 (probably of exaustion) and Elizabeth in 1734 (just plain worn out). Where this family came from I have no idea and is really causing me a headache.

Been through Bucks and Northants without much and was hoping Leicester may give me the answer. If you happen to have any possibles in your tree I would be really grateful for the info.

I know how you feel - My great (lots of times) grandfather John Sturgis was born somewhere in Leicestershire (according to the 1841 census) around 1767, but was irritating enough to die 3 days before the 1851 census, which would have told me where in Leicestershire.  I have been hunting for years and also have a headache.

I assume you've tried the IGI - I did find the Adam Sturges/Ann Blackly marriage which appears to have taken place on 08/02/1679 in Bisbrooke, Rutland, but this gives no further details on Adam unfortunately.  There is also a John Sturges who married one Elizabeth Cole, also in Bisbrooke, on 12/10/1691, but I'm not sure this helps any!

Presumably your Adam Sturges is the one who married Elizabeth Pettit in Puddington, Beds on 10/11/1681?

I'll keep my eye out for any other possibles and let you know if I find anything.
