Holy Island - Pilgrims' Path
|
Hi Heather
Welcome to Rootschat
it looks as if the Mouswald records don't go very far back.
The IGI does have the following daughter's recorded for them at Mouswald:
Dec 1760 Jean Dec 1762 Janet Aug 1774 Mary Sep 1777 Susannah
Scotlands People would probably have the sons as well.
Regards

SP are showing the following Johnstone(variations) baptisms in Mouswald, 1715-1750 - all to William Johnston and Jean Gray:
1740 Margaret 1743 James 1745 Robert 1748 Ann
These might possibly be parents of your Susannah - do any of the names carry through?

Just got these from SP, so will add them:
1750-1780 Mouswald bpt. to David and Susannah:
Aug 1754 John Aug 1756 Jacob Dec 1760 Jean Dec 1762 Janet Jan 1765 Oswald Aug 1767 Abraham Aug 1769 Joseph Mar 1772 Adam Aug 1774 Mary Sep 1777 Susannah Nov 1778 James
It would seem that they either married (maybe by declaration) around 1754 -ish or married outwith Mouswald. The names suggest a possible non-conformist faith

Yes the C Of S was/is Presbyterian. There seem to be a lot of biblical names. I haven't come across so many in a D & G family before

Hi,
I'm descended from one of the Dickson families of Mouswald and have done a bit on most of them as I try to find a connection between my family and the others. Anyway from my research as you probably already know, David was born abt. 1732 and Susannah c 1733. He died 14 Nov 1815 at Glebe Park as did Susannah on 9 Jul 1809. I believe Jacob was married to Jean Bell, Abraham possibly married Sarah Boys / Boyes in Torthorwald on 16 Jun 1793. They had John, 2 x James, Susah and Agnes between 1796 and 1804. Both James were dead by the end of 1800. I think that Janet married James Richardson and had Ann Richardson b 18 Feb 1800 in Dornock & d 18 Apr 1814 at Glebe Park. I also believe Oswald was married or had 'thing' twice but thats just supposition by me. Firstly to Jean Grahame, they had Susannah b Sep 1788 in Mouswald. He then married Mary Dinwoodie and had Mary 1792-1868 and William Dinwoodie Dickson b 24 Mar 1794 then David 11 Apr 1796, Jean 15 Jul 1798, Betty 9 Sep 1800 and Margaret 15 Nov 1803. Mary was married to William Jardine in May 1812 in Mouswald and died in Dalbeattie.
One reason for my look into this family is that my GGG Grandfather Thomas Dickson had a Jacob, David, John, James, Jean, Janet & Mary in his own family although as far I can tell he didn't have a brother Jacob or David. Thomas's parents were Richard and Elspeth Dickson. My Dicksons come from the Village of Mouswald as well as from Woodside closer to the 'border' with Torthorwald parish.
Would love to find out anything you have on your David's Dicksons and happy to be corrected on any of my suggested lines.
Cheers Mick Dickson QLD Australia

One more thing, its possible, due to the Cumbria connection that David was a brother or relative of Rev. Jacob Dickson of Mouswald. Your thoughts?

Jacob Dickson (son of David) married Jean / Jane Bell on 6 Jun 1786 at Holme Cultram. Jane died at Torpenhow in Oct 1787. They had a son John, bp at Blenerhasset, CUL, on 21 Oct 1787. (3 days before his mother was buried) Jacob then married Mary Elliott at Torpenhow on 17 Nov 1788, and they had James 1790; Jacob 1792, Robert 1794, David 1796, Joseph 1799 & William 1802; all bp Aspatria. By this time the name was Dixon Jacob was a Miller and died at Wythop, CUL in 1835.
The only way we were able to connect Jacob to the Mouswald family, was by a potential entry on the IGI, which led to a visit to Dumfries RO. The entry gave no confirmation that it was the correct Jacob; but an entry 30years later about John son of Jacob and the places and wife mentioned did confirm the theory.
We also wondered about the relationship between Jacob Dickson (the clergyman) and 'our Dickson/ Dixon' family. The entry relating to John, son of Jacob was the only one of its kind which made us wonder if it was because he was related.
The name Jacob carried on through different branches of the family, but David did not.

Is there any clue as to the occupation of David Dixon, or any of his other offspring ?
