Thanks to those lovely people who have been indexing the Bury & Norwich Post at Bury records office, I found a reference (edition of 15/12/1824, p. 2 columns 4-5) to my great x5 grandfather, Ralph Guest moving to Bury St Edmunds in 1768 when "an advantageous offer presenting itself, he became an assistant to the late Mr. H. Bu[llen?] of Bury St. Edmund's, in which place, in the course of a few years, he set up business for himself.
Has anyone come across this Mr H Bu[llen?] (the paper is bound tightly and curves severely off on the microfilm after the U in Bu[...] - there look to be ascenders on the next one or two letters) or know what his trade might have been?
My Ralph continued in whatever trade that might have been until 1795, when he devoted himself full-time to his role as choirmaster and organist of St Mary's in Bury St Edmunds.
I have found a reference (http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/redgravehistory/rhg/church_refurb_1786.htm) to Ralph Guest charging £122 11s 4½d for for the refurbishment of the soft furnishings of St Mary's Church, Redgrave in Suffolk so perhaps he was a draper?

Hello there,
A couple of years ago I bought a little A5 booklet, one of those desktop publications, it is An Abbeygate Street Story Memoria of Abbeygate Street in the 1920s and 30s by Dudley White.
In the back is an index to companies/trades operating out of premises on Abbeygate Street in the 1920s
At Nos. 25/26 is John Bulling, Draper.
Then I thought, check in 1844 White's That shows Mrs Mary Ann Bullen of 10 Angel Hill in Bury
There is also Thomas George Bullen at 20 The Buttermarket trading as a Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer.
A hosier and haberdasher (linen and woollen draper) Jonathan Bullen was trading from 55 Abbeygate Street.
So it looks as though the family continued in a similar line of trade. Only other directories I have at home are more recent 1855, 1892, 1937.

Thanks Hephzibah.
Yes historicaldirectories is good - if it covers the period and place you're interested in! It's a real shame that it's not an on-going project, adding more directories. By contrast, it's a worry that it might disappear entirely next year (I'm sure I saw something once on the site that said it would remain available for three years from January 2005) - it'll be a great loss if the site is taken down.
I was hoping someone might have access to directories or similar earlier than the earliest on historicaldirectories, as the time-frame is c. 1770. The edition of the newspaper is dated to 1824 and calls him the late Mr Bull[..], so that's a terminus ante quem.
However, given the trade of later Bullens in Bury, it's looking probable that that he was involved in furniture, draper and haberdashery. (Isn't haberdashery a lovely word?)
Interestingly up to about the '50s or '60s my Guests seem to have been involved in furniture in Ilford, Essex. Though intervening generations had other trades.
