Eton conundrum!
« on: Sunday 07 October 07 17:09 BST (UK) »

Can anyone help with this please - my head is spinning!

I started by looking for the baptism of Elizabeth Godwin who married Thomas Payne in Eton in 1735. the marriage entry gives no details other than their names and that they were both otp.

As far as I can see, there are only 2 Elizabeth Godwin baptisms in Eton:

Feb 1700 d/o Richard & Apr 1701 d/o Richard. Presumably the first Elizabeth died.

This would make my Elizabeth 34 when she married Thomas Payne in 1735 - not out of the question, and ,as her last child (that I know of) was baptised in 1743, this could well be her.

Then I look for her parents in Eton and this is where the problems start.  Roll Eyes

There's an IGI marriage for a Richard Godwin and Elizabeth Butler in Eton in 1704, but Richard is having children baptised in Eton as from 1694!

Mary 1694
Richard 1695
Robert 1696
Johannes (John?) 1698
Elizabeth 1700
Elizabeth 1701
Anna 1704

(all entered as children of Richard - no mother's name given).

I thought that perhaps the 1704 marriage to Elizabeth Butler could be a second marriage, but - if that were the case - there's no sign of a first!!

Would this couple really have married 10 years after the baptism of their first child? Or, have I got the wrong couple?

My head is spinning with possibilities of first & second marriages - perhaps, going back to Elizabeth Godwin - the 1735 marriage was her second and her maiden name isn't Godwin!!

I need a fresh perspective please! Perhaps someone could come up with another idea?   Grin

Hi Jill

No fresh perspective except to say that just because someone is recorded as of this parish on marriage that they were born there.  Also a marriage in a parish does not necessarily mean that their children would be baptised there, and vice versa.

How common is Godwin in that area?  Cousins, brothers ??

As I say, just thoughts.

Thanks for the input, Nell.

I had a name search done by Bucks FHS and there aren't that many Godwin/Goodwins about in Bucks at this time. The nearest Elizabeth to Eton (other than the 2 actually in Eton) was in Chesham.

Of course, it's quite likely that the Godwins may have come from the other side of the Thames in Berks and perhaps that's where I should now be looking as I'm really not happy with the possible Godwin parents marrying 9 years after their first child.

Thanks.

Have just spent a while checking Godwin name on my Bucks ancestry cd and it is actually very common.  I could not find relevant baptism/marriage details although they had other Godwins mentioned.  The variant Goodwin is even more common and there are some Godwyn, Godwyne, Goodwyn, Goodwyne and Goldwin variants.  I checked Phillimores cd for bucks and could find no Thomas Payne/Elizabeth Butler matches although there were Paynes/Paines and Butlers in Bucks.  In Eton I came across a Richard Buttellere in the 1522 musters.  These cds tend to be annoying as you find very probable links but can never quite make the final connection!
My own family migrated to Eton from Burnham/Wooburn (and criss/crossing the Bucks/Berks borders) could yours have done the same in reverse?  Either way the IGI is not particularly good for Bucks nor is Family HistoryOnline!  Just checked my Berks ancestry cd and nothing concrete there either.
Sorry I couldn't find anyting else.
Regards

I appreciate you taking the time to look - thanks Steph.

A lot of my father's side of the family came from that 'no man's land' area where Berks, Bucks & Oxon join, so I know what you mean. Most of it is badly covered by the IGI and Family History Online isn't too much better! It gets a bit expensive after a while!
