Sharman/Prior
« on: Sunday 07 October 07 17:44 UTC (UK) »

Greetings

I am looking for any information about George Sharman and Ruth Prior.

I have a Ruth Prior in my tree ... married to George Sharman. She was a sister to William , Annie and Thomas. Her parents were William B:1850? and Emma ? B:1851?
I have some information about Ruth but absolutely nothing about George ..I have been stuck here since 2001.

Any more information I can get about Ruth and George would be appreciated.

Thanks

In South Stoke -

Ann Prior baptised Jan 13 1873 d/o William, labourer & Emma
Ruth Prior bp Jun 25 1876  - ditto -
Henry Thomas Prior bp Dec 8 1878  - ditto -
Sidney Prior bp 7 Aug 1881  - ditto -
Job Prior bp 30 Nov 1884  - ditto -
Albert Prior bp 4 Sep 1887   - ditto -
Ada Prior bp 28 Dec 1889   - ditto -
Arthur Herbert Prior bp 14 May 1893  - ditto -

and there's one more Prior baptism -

James Frank Prior born 8 Dec 1893, bp Jan 28 1894 s/o Ruth

William Prior married Emma Druce  17 Sep 1871
He is of full age, bach. lab. s/o John , lab.
She is under age, spin. d/o John, lab.
Witnesses: Richard Hodges, Mary Hodges

I'm afraid there's no sign of George & Ruth's marriage in South Stoke.

Thank you both for the speedy replies. What you have told me is about all I know also.
I got the info that they were together from a death certificate of Ruth.
I have been looking since 2001 and have posted on other forums with no success.
I know they had at least 5 sons.
Thomas .. Reginald ... Francis ... Fredrick and George A. who is on the cert as a son and from Dorchester .

When searching I found that there are two Ruth Prior's born about 10 yrs apart from the same area.

George Sharman is a mystery to me .

Hi John ...

Have you searched for George and Ruth's marriage on the GRO indexes - from 1901 when Ruth was still single to the date (and perhaps a little after!) when their eldest child was born?  (The marriage certificate would give the names of George's father, plus his occupation, and might help you to track him down in a census prior to his marriage.)

Do you have a birth certificate for any of their children (which would give father's name and occupation)?

Just trying to cover all angles!

Hi Penny
I have searched FreeBMD and haven't found anything.I didn't know what GRO was so I did a search .. the site says it will be online in 2008.
I have very little information to go on ... and whatever I find is not known for sure.
How do I access the GRO indexes ??

Hi John ...

If you can give me names/birth years of their children, I'll have a look on the indexes for you.

Greetings;

Thanks for the replies ...

All I have access to is the 1881 census and freeBMD.
Everything posted here is basically what I already have  ... its the marriage that has me stumped .
I'm wondering what happened from when Ruth was a servant in 1901 to when George Arthur was born in 1909.
Did she marry someone else first ? Are there other children ? Did she and George even get married ? I've tried numerous spellings of both names and a range of years from 1900 to 1912.
George J and Ruth had 5 sons I know of starting in 1909 with George A. and ending with Frederick in 1917.
This is why I'm searching the Oxford area because it seems to be where everything took place.

Thanks John

getting a birth cert of one of the children may help - it will as has already been mentioned give a name and occupaton for George's father
It may also indicate if Ruth has been married before (as JeannieR found no marriage for Sharman/Prior in the full indexes)

Hi Again........

I had a family mystery like this.........

To cut a long story short, the couple never married, but had five children together.
It took me years to sort it . I had this confirmed by someone quite recently.......

You say that you have a death certificate for Ruth.  What exactly does this say - something along the lines of "Ruth SHARMAN, widow of George" or something different?

I have checked the GRO indexes 1901-1909 (inc.) and there is no marriage for any Ruth PRIOR (never mind to George SHARMAN!).  Tomorrow I shall work forward from 1910 - sometimes things got done in the "wrong order"!

Greetings;

The certificate says: Ruth Sharman  ..widow  of George Joseph Sharman and that the informant was George A. Sharman .
George A. is the first of the 5 brothers { I think }Born 1909 in Fulham.
I have searched that area also for marriages of George and Ruth and found nothing.
