Cannot trace any of the Gilboe's you mention on the 1871/81/91 Census for Scotland.
Wondered whether he was Irish and had only come over in early 1890's. Looked on IGI for Ireland and there is just one entry:
Patrick Gilboe b.25/6/1870 Leitrim, Ireland son of Michael Gilboe and Mary Redican. Could the name you can't read be 'Redican'. If so, then it looks like John came from Ireland.

Many thanks. That sounds like them. the STRAINs were also Irish, originally from Donegal, & "REDICAN" looks like a good bet for a match on death certificate. I wonder if Patrick also came to Scotland Sadly the GILBOE family were wiped out by TB.

The closest I can see to Gilboe is GIILBOY in the 1891 census. Just one family group, headed by Martin (b. 1843) and Bridget (MCEWAN), both Irish living in Whittinghame, East Lothian. The looked to have married on 08 OCT 1866 Dalkeith, Midlothian. From their 1871 census entry, Martin shows as coming from Co. Mayo - so not sure if there is a connection to yours. At least one daughter, Mary, born in Lasswade in 1873.
Regards.
Monica
