Leicester hospitals 1905
« on: Tuesday 09 October 07 09:14 BST (UK) »

Hi All,

On sending for the death cert. of my Great Grandmother I dicovered that she died in the General Infirmary, Leicester in January 1905.

I thought that there were two main hospitals in Leicester: The City General and The Royal Infirmary - does anyone know whether the hospital in 1905 was either of these please?

Greeting’s Again Maggie…….

The General Hospital has had several names over the years :~
Evington Poor Law Hospital.
North Evington Infirmary.
Leicester General Hospital.
Pepper Pot Infirmary.
( is what the locals called it due to the distinctive Water Tower / Chimney.)
Also it was used through out the wars for the recovering members of the  armed forces.

Personally I would go along with that is was Leicester General Hospital.

Do you know the burial place of your Grandmother ?
I can have a look for you on my Discs if you post her details.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for that - it sounds as if it has been through several stages  Smiley

Although my great grandmother died in Leicester, her home was Heather, near Ashby de la Zouch at the time.  I'll give you details just in case you might have Heather on your disc - I think that might be where she would be buried, although I'm not sure ...

Emma Bywater - died 25 January 1905.  The age on her death cert. was 54 years - although she would have been around 62 in reality - she seemed to change her age after her marriage  Roll Eyes

My great grandfather, her husband, died later the same year and was, hopefully, buried with her:

William John Bywater - died September 14th 1905 at Heather.  He was 57 when he died.

Both deaths were registered by their son, Henry Bywater, who lived at The Lodge, Heather - I don't know whether that helps!

Thanks for your interest Mike.

Hi again Mike,

Thank you so much - I didn't expect you to visit the Records Office for the information - but I'm really glad that you did  Smiley

That completes the circle really for my Great Grandparents - the only thing I need to do now is visit Heather and see if I can find their gravestone  Smiley which I will try to do in the near future  Wink

I am really grateful to you for your help with this - the last thing I was expecting from this post was such valuable information  Cheesy it is much appreciated.

Hi Mike was just reading how you helped maggie and wondered if you could help me . I am trying to narrow down some dates and places of death for John and Ellen smith. He was born Woodford Hase 1855 and Ellen [nee Edden]eydon 1851 . I know they were in Attleborough at Gorse barn Cottage in 1901. I have several dates and places for them both  in Tamworth, Aston  Nuneaton for John and Tamworth Aston and Lutterworth for Ellen . Two of their sons were in that area around the time i have for Ellen in Lutterworth 1924 .Edden was i know in Willey at Farm Field cottage and George Edden was possibly claybrooke both farm labourers . I am wondering if they remained in Attleborough and John died Nuneaton 1919 and Ellen moved to be with Edden and George .
Is there any way of  checking on your disc for me .
Thank you Tarnya Smiley

Greeting’s & Welcome Tarnya…….

Sorry for the delay but I found your details difficult to follow……

I have checked out those Deaths dates for John & Ellen Smith.
On the G.R.O. Death Index Records site:~

Jan.~ Feb.~ Mar. Qrt. 1919.
John Smith.
Nuneaton District.
Aged 65.
Cert No. 6d. 1039.

Jan.~ Feb.~ Mar. Qrt. 1924.
Ellen Smith.
Lutterworth District.
Aged. 73.
Cert. No. 7a.12.

It certainly looks like Ellen either went to live with George Edden
in Claybrooke Magna or Parva.
Or Passed away there on a visit.

I can have a look at the Burial Registers for Claybrooke Magna / Parva.1924.
Next time I’m at the Records Office.
And report back on there.

In the meantime an other way to find out when Ellen moved is to ask on the
“ Warwickshire Section “ on this site
For anyone having access to “ Electoral Rolls” for Nuneaton 1918. ~ 1925.
This will indicate when John did not appear and when Ellen moved away from Attleborough.

Mike you are a star can i ask what makes you think Ellen went to claybrooke and not Willey . Please will you look at records when you next go . Where are the records for that area kept ?
I will look on the other site and ask for someone to check electoral rolls.
Thanks again
