Caldewgate records.
« on: Wednesday 10 October 07 14:52 BST (UK) »

Hi, I have just started to search for a friend's ancestors and they happen to originate from Cumberland, now I am not familiar with this far up north, I mainly do my searches in the south of England. so would be very grateful if someone can point me in the right direction as to where I may purchase some parish records for Cumberland. the areas that are mentioned through the census are,Carlisle,Caldewgate,Whitehaven. the ancestors were Hatters, cotton weavers and loomers. and the earlier ones on the 1841 census are mentioned as living in county . Whitehaven and Brocklebank. so would need to have the parish of Whitehaven on the records.
many thanks, hope someone can help me locate these parish records to purchase.

Places in/aroundCarlisle can be tricky - I suggest you check these

There is a list of Cumbria FHS publications to download here (not much Carlisle stuff apparently) http://cumbriafhs.com/cgi-bin/site/main.pl?action=publications

Hi June

As far as Whitehaven goes, it's not the easiest place to do research from afar!  There were four large parishes fairly early on, and also some quite early Nonconformists.

Also, the Whitehaven Parishes were chapels from St Bees before that, and there were quite a number of entries from that side of Whitehaven in the St Bees registers and also others on the edge of Whitehaven such as Hensingham and Moresby long after the Whitehaven churches opened.

By the way, the tick in 1841 will mean all of Cumberland, not just Whitehaven.

Whitehaven was also a huge port and shipbuilding centre at one time, and these are very big registers.

What are the earliest exact birth/ baptisms or marriages you have with a more exact address?  Do you have some names, or a church at least some of them used? Maybe we could narrow it down a bit.

Sorry I can't help more.
