could some one check 71 & 81 census please for
John & Mary Sewell living Barns Yard Botchergate Carlisle
I have a letter dated 1878 from the above address could I please have full details if found

Hi Audrey,

Do you know anything more about them, ages, birthplaces, occupation etc?

In 1871 there are 3 John & Mary Sewells in Botchergate but not Barns Yard, and in 1881 2 couples, again none Barns Yard.

thanks for trying my G .grandparents also John & Mary Sewell were living Hare & Hounds Lane thats one you most likely found  I have a letter from this outher John & Mary Sewell dated 1878 and trying to find who it refers too not too much detail in it says Mary Sewell is the only one in the family working in cotton Mills that 5 Children had died.Sarah Ann is talked about and a Catherine which could be a married daughter the address on the letter is Barns Yard Botchergate

They could well have moved by1881 census
Here's the other one in 1881 which looks likely then:
